I was watching the movie Reeker the other night and it suddenly dawned on me that Lost could be following a very similar storyline. The island could be some kind of pergutory location for all the islanders whom are already dead having not survived the plane crash. It does appear that most of them all have their dirty little secrets and I'm sure more will emerge for those that don't. Now they're all going to pay for them. This would explain a lot of the weird happenings and that black smoke could be some sort of soul reaper, we already saw it finish off Mr Echo.... Also it appears that Charlie is def going to be killed, but I think that this is the case for everybody on the island.

Lets hear your theories, and don't say it's all a dream 'caus that will be the worst ending ever.

It's been suggested many times before and dismissed by the writers. It does make alot of sense though and makes you wonder if it was the original plot of the series but they changed it as it became quite obvious what was going on.

Yeah but they could be saying that to cover for themselves , does the theory not go that they already have the ending but they just have to insert 8 series of filler in between?

Like Royale said this has been denied by the writers about a million times. It's one of the earliest lost theories, people were suggesting it after seeing the pilot. I don't think it was the original idea either because it would have been far too obvious. Remember Jack's words to Kate at the end of 1x03:

"It doesn't matter, Kate, who we were - what we did before this, before the crash. It doesn't really -- 3 days ago we all died. We should all be able to start over."

As I've said before I don't think there's anything wrong with seeing the island as a kind of metaphoric purgatory especially given all the literature and mythological concepts the writers have been inspired by. But purgatory is not literally the answer to all the mysteries, nor was it ever going to be.

They've said many times that there won't be any single answer to what's happening on the island. It's more complicated than that.

This was one of the very first theories to surface on the net after LOST became big. The writers came out and said, it is not purgatory.
