Chorus to Netopia router (Eircoms)

    Hi all,
    Can someone PLEASE help!
I recently got Chorus digital into my gaff, with cable broadband!
    All's working great!

The thing is I need to get wireless internet access working so that I can get a wireless phone to attach to the internet (school project).
I have a left over Eircom wireless router (2247NWG, silver colour ) that I'm hoping I can still use!

At the moment I only have an ethernet connection to the Chorus broadband box.
So my question is how can I (if it's possible) include my Netopia router in this scenario and create a way of accessing my internet wirelessly!

I did some searching on Boards.ie & there is a post that gives some details on how to do this:
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055040528&referrerid=&highlight=Buying+a+wireless+router...+advice%3F
but from the start of the instructions I'm stumped because there's no "Expert mode > Configure > WAN", nor is there an "Interface type" anywhere that allows me to choose "Default Gateway" from a dropdown list.
I think the user just went by old menus he found online, which aren't the same (v. annoying of Netopia).
There's a glimpse of the correct menu here:

    Any ideas anyone?
    Thanks,
    ITB.

    your second link isn't working
Are you sure there is no expert mode? you would have to log in at either 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.254(in your browser) to get to it.

Are you sure that you actually need wireless for your project? could you give more details of what exactly the project is? Surely the wireless phone will have a base which will supply the wireless connection for the phone - the base would presumably be attached to the chorus modem?

As you can see from the thread that you linked to the Netopia is not geared for the role that you want it to play without a fair bit of changing. If you can afford it a wireless router (without a built in modem) would be much easier to set up.

    Hi gang,
    Thanks for the replies!!!
My college project is to create a web page (using servlets) and have it running through Tomcat. So basically I need to access the page through a wifi mobile (Nokia N80) so that the page can be tested on a mobile.
At the moment I don't have wireless broadband at home, only Chorus.

Last night I heard that all I may need to do is plug out the Chorus braodband from my PC, then plug in the eircom wireless router that I have to my PC & that when the phone searches for an access point it'll find the eircom wireless router. Then I just have to go to the http://localhost/...blah...blah... page where my site is running.
I've been told it's as simple as pluggin the eircom router in & I don't have any settings to change or anything! Basically the Chorus internet ethernet cable will be plugged out of the PC (i.e. so no internet access) and the eircom wireless router just plugged into the PC instead (obviously still no internet access). I'll try it tonight & give the feedback. BTW I think this is what dub45 is saying!

I've accepted that, going forward, it's best I buy a wireless modem router OR wireless router for my house.
I've been into PC World in Airside Swords (didn't get time to check out Harvey Normans or DID, or Currys in Blanch) but I was confused whether I needed a router or a MODEM router.
As I've said already I have Chorus coming into the house, which consists of a coaxial cable going into a Mororola SurfBoard with 4 ethernet ports (& one USB) availiable.
So do I need a router or a modem router?

Also will connecting up the router to one of these ethernet ports be non-efficient, i.e. only one of the 4 ports being used for a router to service possibly multiple PC's/Laptops etc...?
Or would there be no bottleneck?

Also, I actually thought that I would be able to buy a cable router, thinking tha the "cable" part would mean that there would be a connection for the coaxial cable coming into the house. It seems that there are hardly no (I found none in PC World) routers that'll take this coaxial connection.
So is my only option to have the current Chorus box and another router box, it would be nice to only have the one device?

I have seen that there are wireless Motorola SurfBoards that allow this but should I be looking at a better spec routers like the Belkin range.
At the mimo (...lol...see what I did there :D ) PC World have prices cheaper than online prices for Belkin routers.

Again, much thanks for the help Dub45 & Tuxy, and any info on my qustions above is much appreciated.
    Thanks!!!

ps. Tuxy here's a link instead of the second link that was broken on my previous post:

You already have a cable modem supplied by Chorus. So if you are buying anything its a wireless router that you want. Virtually all of the combined units on sale (i.e. modem and wireless router) are for use with dsl broadband which is bb over a phone line.

Do you not have a tutor in college to give you a bit of practical guidance on this sort of stuff?

Actually yeah, I guess I can ask the Networking lecturer guy in college, great idea dub45, cheers!

Last night I tryed disconnecting the Chorus ethernet cable from my PC & plugging in the Ericom wireless router instead. The Nokia N80 found the Eircom router when it searched, but then it asked for the WEP key which I read from the routers web config page & typed in...but it then said something about "No Gateway reply". I searched on the net and found a fair few sites with info: http://www.google.ie/search?sourceid=navclient&hl=en-GB&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLJ,GGLJ:2006-31,GGLJ:en-GB&q=nokia+%22no+gateway+reply%22+n80
I tried a few things like changing from WEP to WPA (both types) and using a shared key but that came back with something like invalid shared key.

    I'll try more later today!

Turn off the security in the Netpia (if only temporarily) and see if this will simplify things for you.
