San Andreas isn't half the game that GTAIII is.

Mine'd probably be GTAIII, Rez, Guitar Hero, MGS2 and Pro Evo.

So many great games but here it goes,

    1-Ico
    2-Shadow of the Colossus
    3-Silent Hill 2
    4-Burnout 2
    5-Fantavision

But then there are so many more awesome games, I've got about 120 PS2 games now and won't live long enough to finish them all!

Certainly the strongest previous gen. console. To narrow it down is extremely difficult but the following have changed my outlook on video gaming in profound and magical ways:

    1. We Love Katamari - well, I certainly do.
    2. Beyond Good and Evil - epic in scope (but not in length alas), wonderfully realised. Like a more action packed, sci-fi orientated Zelda.
    3. MGS3 - a very well made stealth em up that gets much more right than wrong
    4. Guitar Hero - solely because I have never devoted such scary lengths of time and practices to a game before
    5. DMC3 - because it consistently bitch slapped me and challenged me to learn how to play it right. And it was worth it.
Edit: Maybe Ico in place of DMC3

    GTA : Vice City
    Pro Evolution Soccer 6
    Burnout 2
    God of War
    Metal Gear Solid 2

V.hard - I would maybe swap metal gear for something else.

    Colin Mcrae 3
    MGS3
    Pro Evo
    Def Jam Fight 4 NY
    Gran Turismo 4/ Burnout 2
    GTA 3
7 but I couldnt help myself

How Shadow of the Colossus isnt in more of your lists baffles me. Its the best PS2 game. I havent played ICO, so i cant say which is better.

    For me its...
    1. Shadow of the Colossus
    2. Final Fantasy X
    3. Gta3
    4. Ace Combat 4/5
    5. Will update when i can think of one.

Also one of the first PS2 games... whoo-da-thunkit. Oh and going for €2 in GAME in the Ilac Centre last i checked.

Shadow of the Colossus - epic in so many ways, a must for any console gamer.
    Final Fantasy 12 - i'm addicted.
MGS3 - when i buy it for myself that is.
God of War - ultraviolence and Greek mythology, the perfect combination.
Virtua Fighter 4 - the deepest fighter i've ever played and rock hard to boot.

...I didn't include Resident Evil 4 because it's better on Gamecube.

    1. Gradius V: Gaming perfection. Old school but better than any next gen game.
    2. FFX: The last great FF game. Arguably the best Rpg ever.
    3. Shadow of the Colossus: Beautiful and engrossing.
    4. We love katamari: Yes I do. An absolute joy to play.
    5. God of War: A pleasant surprise and a fantastic hack n' slash.

    Resi 4 would be no. 2 but it's a gamecube game :p

    1. Rez -- it's more than just another rail-shooter. No, it is. SHUT UP, you bastards didn't buy the damn thing! *sniff*
    2. Shadow of the Colossus -- creates such a sense of lonelyness it's hard to hold back the tears. I don't know how many more Colossi I can bring myself to kill...
    3. Okami -- buy this. Right now. An engrossing adventure like this should be on a Nintendo console. The fact that it's on the lowly PS2 is all the more surprising. The opinion that I love this 100x more than Wind Waker... well, I'm not famous, so it doesn't count for much. Buy it anyway, it's cheaper now.
    4. Beyond Good & Evil -- again: buy this. It's slightly flawed in certain areas (sneaking can be a pain at times), but this adventure had a certain boldness to its design that should make other cookie-cutter rip-offs hang their head in shame.
As a bonus, if this keeps selling I may actually get my damned sequels.
    5. Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution -- this is one of those near-timeless classics. Like Street Fighter II, VF4:evo allows you in to get started easily, mashing out buttons & directions until you start to grasp what it's about. And then it teaches you what a scrub you were. And then it teaches you how to NOT BE A SCRUB with the finest tutorials from this or any generation of fighters. Why they'd get rid of this fine feature in VF5 is beyond me.
    6. Ratchet & Clank 3 -- a textbook example in polishing a good thing 'til it shimmers. R&C 3 (prob 2 as well) is just so much FUN to play, my writing fails me (and my being a crap writer isn't helping). Also, FPS designers take note: I enjoyed this game in FPS mode more than any FPS since R&C3's release. Weapons don't all have to be based on gunpowder & lead, y'know...
There you go: Kiki's top-5(ish) list.
Except that the PS2 has lots of more great & good games.

Uhhhh.... I'm going to cheat by rating my top five serieseseses.

    1. Metal Gear Solid 2 & 3
    2. Okami
    3. Katamari Damacy & We Love Katamari
    4. GTA III, VC and SA
    5. Soul Calibur III

Honourable mention goes to PES which might have ranked higher, but I play it on the PC these days.

    Metal Gear Solid 3
    Resident Evil 4
    Final Fantasy X
    We love Katamari
    Shadow of the Colossus

...tough list to make though. Really reminds you just how great the PS2 was/is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,614 ✭✭✭The Sparrow

    1. GTA III - Really could be any of the GTA games, but III was the first game I properly played and completed and it blew me away and made me a gamer. I think I've played it through three times at this stage! And it cost me less then 10 quid when I bought it second hand so great value

    2. Metal Gear Solid 2 - Again the first Metal Gear Solid game I played and it amazed me.

    3. Resident Evil 4 - Just started playing this a few weeks ago after not never playing a resi game before and am loving it

    4. God of War 1 - Unadulterated fun. kratos is a bad ass... bring on God of War 2

    5. Canis Canem Edit - After all of the negative press stories, I didn't know what to expect. But they were all wrong. Its really a very sweet game that constantly made me laugh. And I loved skate boarding around when it was snowing.

Shadow of the Collussus doesnt make the list because i haven`t played it yet but it sounds great and its next on my list before I retire the PS2 for the XBOX 360 that is gathering dust as I play through all the playstation games that I`ve missed!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,339 ✭✭✭✭tman

GTAIII - Vice city was the pinnacle of the 3D series so far, but the initial wow factor of III was something else...
God of War - greek mythology and violence... it's like they made the game just for me (it even had tits in it!:p )
We <3 Katamari - fantastic stuff!
Resi 4 - far nicer to look at on the gamecube, but still worth playing for the extra bits and bobs...

I'd love to add SotC to this list, but I just couldn't get into it...
Okami is still sitting on my shelf gathering dust, I might give that a lash this afternoon...

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,400 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Silent Hill 2 really needs a mention. Not only is it one of the most beautiful games artistically it's one of the most disturbing experiences I've sat through and had a narrative that was as good as the very best books and films.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 760 ✭✭✭TheAlmightyArse

    Here we go:

    1) We Love Katamari
    2) Silent Hill 2
    3) God Hand
    4) OutRun 2006
    5) Space Channel 5

With honourable mentions to Grand Theft Auto III & Vice City, which are important and fun but only almost great, to Ico, which is beautiful and quite moving but marred by too much ****ty, ****ty combat, and to Gradius V and Project Zero 2, which should be on my list but aren't.

Shadow of the Collossus and Michigan might both deserve places, but they're still in my to play pile.

Okami, God of War and Metal Gear Solid: I just don't like them, so there.

Okami, God of War and Metal Gear Solid: I just don't like them, so there.

    Heathen! :p
Surprised about all the SotC love. It was a great game, but it was very flawed - repetition (towards the end, it really did feel like one mind-numbing boss rush) and distracting frame rate being the most obvious. Some of the Collosi rank among the great video game moments - the horseback battle in the sand was spectacular - but thought ICO was very much the better game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,148 ✭✭✭✭Raskolnikov

Silent Hill 2 is the best Playstation 2 game ever, bar none.

Here's my honourable mentions, in no particular order.
    • Clock Tower 3
    • Project Zero
    • Silent Hill 4 (Yea, I know it was panned, I actually enjoyed it a lot).

Can't think of a fifth game I liked

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,216 ✭✭✭✭monkeyfudge

Clocktower 3 is great fun... it's basically a hide and go seek simulator...

Obscure is another great horror game on the PS2 that was sort of overlooked... And it had a two player mode as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,005 ✭✭✭Creature

    Capcom vs SNK 2
    GTA: vice City
    Virtua fighter 4
Silent Hill 3 (Sorry folks thought this was much better than 2 :P)
    Metal Gear Solid 2

Never played God of War or Shadow of the Collossus but I'm starting to wish I did..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,653 ✭✭✭steviec

    1) Shadow of the Colossus - simply stunning. A work of art and a game I will remember for a very very long time.
    2) Final Fantasy X - great story, good characters, fantastic battle system, one of the all time best RPGs
    3) GTA: San Andreas - great dialogue and limitless variety & replayability that built on the incredibly solid foundations of the previous two games
    4) Metal Gear Solid 2 - wonderful game mechanics, dialogue and characters were great even if the plot wasn't
    5) Burnout 3: Takedown - the best arcade driving game ever, every single aspect is designed to be pure fun

Beyond Good & Evil would probably be on the list if my PS2 hadn't broken halfway through the game and by the time Sony sent a replacement I just couldn't get back into it. Loved every second of the first half of the game and will go back some day. Honorable mentions for GT4, Katamari, PES, Suikoden 3, MGS3, TOCA...

And I still have to play through Okami and God of War 1 & 2 amongst others :)

    1. Gran Turismo 4

    3. F1 06
    4. GTA: San Andreas
    5. Toca Race Driver 2

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,658 ✭✭✭Patricide

    In no perticular order:
    1.Grand theft auto vice city
    2.Shadow Of the Collosus
    3.Metal Gear Solid 3
    4.Final Fantasy X
5.Red Faction(an oldie but a goodie, totally overlooked game. Geomodding was some laugh)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,994 ✭✭✭ambro25

    I. Burnout 3 - because, well... just because.

II. Soul Calibur 3 - does everything VF4 does (such as posted earlier), but in Prettier-O-Vision™ ... and with swords g'dammit!

III. Rez - I know, it's a DC title, but the PS2 version trumps it because the PS2 has a digital out: you haven't "played" until you've played PS2 Rez with a DLP projector, an arcade stick and a proper digital amp/surround setup turned right up ;)

IV. [insert RPG or other japanesy title à la Okami, Ico, Shadow of Colossus etc. I don't like/play them, but I readily acknowledge that, since this is a 'Top 5', at least one of them should be great enough to be in here.

    V. and the shocker for last: Battlefield 2 MC (as best online FPS on PS2)

But you'd still need a Trancevibrator in your lap for that extra... touch! :p

The thing is, despite many feelings that Sony has totally commercialised gaming and destroyed the creativity in game development, judging by these lists and the many similar posts that have gone before, it seems the PS2 is possibly the best games machine that has ever been made.

    I'll let that sink in.....

    Scary, isn't it?

Trancevibrator not required in the least, when you have a half-decent subwoofer :D:p

Can't put them in any order, it'd hurt too much...

    God Of War,
    Shadow of the Colossus,
    Silent Hill 2,
    Final Fantasy X,
    We Love Katamari

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 499 ✭✭Gizzle

But now Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is crying in the corner....

    1. GT4 - Best Driving Simulator Ever (don't think I'll ever finish it)
    2. BLACK - Shamefully overlooked FPS, superbly addictive
    3. Killzone - Another overlooked FPS.
    4. PES
    5. GTA San Andreas

I think it's scarier to look at the release list from Sony 1st party developers. Almost every game out of Sony has been a little leftfield and original even if many haven't been entirely successful. With Eyetoy, Ico, SotC etc. they come out with some very original stuff that you would normally expect from nintendo.

I prefer the SNES and MD, the pinnacle of 2D gaming. GBA was rather excellent and the DS is heading for classic status.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,510 ✭✭✭sprinkles

    very tough list to compile,

    in no particular order

    PES 5
    ICO
    Guitar Hero
    GTA III
(and just to be different) Gregory Horror show

I don't believe that Killzone was "overlooked" as such, so hyped as the PS2's Halo killer as it was for so long... more like a decent enough FPS that failed to live up to the hype.

There are much better FPS's on PS2 (IMHO).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,658 ✭✭✭Patricide

yea, i thought there was no good serious fps on the console, as in timesplitters 3 would be the best actuall fps on the console imo but its cartoony and stuff so.

Gave it a go a while ago and despite having buckets of charm and great localisation I just found it a little too tough. I hadn't a clue what was happening most of the time. Never even managed to get the 3rd soul.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,510 ✭✭✭sprinkles

It's tough alright and I jammed my way through 1 of the souls but it's so rewarding when you get it right :)
