Not those kind, but the ones that record films in cinemas. I saw the warning yesterday about this before the film started, and it requested any cinema goers to report it, if they see it. Would you?

i'd sit in beside them and strech, cough loudly, get up to go toilet and rock my chair. that'd learn him.

but seiriously i would repot him/her ya.

Nah, sure it'd only disturb the film for me. I have taken a picture of the "recording equipment and cameras strictly prohibited" signs on my camera before though :)

I only ever spotted someone filming the one time and it must have been some super gadget altogether! I was at the back of the cinema and he was center at the front and all through the film, I could see a red light on the top of his head.

After the film he was walking out with the tiny camera sitting on his head (on the top of a band kind of like headphones) before pulling it off as he went out the door. :) Only if it was annoying me, would I bother reporting anyone.

only if he was sitting infront of me blocking my view.

I never got people who watch movies like that on a regular basis. Bar the odd decent quality release most of them are grainy, not properly focused and sometimes have sync issues to boot. Don't get me wrong, sometimes I've resorted to it myself when certain films never got to our cinemas (but even at that, not very often). But I'd never, ever watch anything that was actually coming into the cinema...what a way to dilute the experience. It's like a race for some people so they can 'brag' that they've seen the movie, regardless of how enjoyable it actually is...on their PC Screen...from a crappy recording. But that part is usually left out.

Anyway, no, I wouldn't report them, unless they were disrupting the film in some way.

I remember when I went to see Revenge of the Sith in the cinema a prick in the row in front of me was recording all the lightsabre battles on a camera and then watching the recordings back during the talky bits of the film.

I wouldnt report them, in fact I would probably ask the guy afterwards for a copy :p:D

There was something in yesterdays Herald or Indo about a guy caught videotaping a film in <an enemy base> in Dublin!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,211 ✭✭✭Royale with Cheese

Nah I wouldn't bother. It's not like these people are making any money out of it. Plus that annoying downloading movies is a crime ad is not only appearing before every movie I see in the cinema, but on some of the dvds I buy as well. Enough is enough, I bought the f*cking dvd. Don't preach to me about piracy.

I saw somebody recording Mission Impossible III in Dundrum last year, hardly worth their while, I don't know why they were bothering.

Does/ has anyone buy/ bought those films? Is the quality not just extremely bad? Surely there are a lot easier and more profitable moneymaking schemes.

Narr. Do you think the min-wage cinema workers would care?

On a related note... those DVD warnings! "You wouldn't steal a car, handbag etc etc". How presumptuous!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 36,634 ✭✭✭✭Ruu_Old

The best piracy warnings are the ones they used to have at the beginning of video tapes (so yes they were very old) with the chap sitting there telling you why piracy is wrong. I think they were sponsored by different companies. I hope you enjoy the film (or could have been presentation). :)

Indeed, maybe they're the ones doing the recording...

With cinemas going digital and the films being distributed on removable hard disks, it may become even easier to copy them (and have perfect reproduction):D It probably wouldn't take that long to rip a hard disk;)

My favourite was the one where someone was trying to return a faulty pirated video to a dodgy cockney guy "naaah it's your tracking, mate!".

Pirating in this fashion accounts for an insignificant portion of the profits/viewers of these movies. The quality is almost always awful, and there's a certain experience in the cinema, that you just don't get from even legit DVDs.

I've never understood people getting collections of bad copies of mediocre movies, or people who can't wait a few weeks to see a new movie, instead opting to watch it in poor quality on a small screen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,247 ✭✭✭ROCKMAN

Pirate copy one night, sticker on the outside of the box "PIRATING CREATES JOBS"

    :D:D:D

I personally can't watch a pirated movie. They are shite. Even if its a bad film I'd still prefer to watch it properly.

Ya know I've never really understood the point of those piracy ads on dvds. I mean anyone who's watching it almost certainly bought the dvd in question. If it was a pirated copy there wouldn't be any ad because, well, the pirates tend to take those things out :D

So the honest consumers have to suffer through these traumatising ads (which they can't skip) accusing them of funding terrorism and baby killing and other bs. I paid for the dvd, you f**king w**kers!! F**k off!

Would it kill them to have a simple on-screen message at the start of dvd, thanking you for buying it and supporting the film industry?

No wonder everyone is downloading movies, they don't want to watch those stupid ads anymore!

I thought the best one was 'Video Piracy funds terrorism' followed by that blonde english chap looking for his money back from a scumbag. "verbal contract, not worth the paper it's printed on", then he wimps out and goes away all sad like.

    /edit refresh page before posting.

No, I wouldn't care less if someone recorded the film while I was watching and I woudn't try to ruin it either. Can't understand why someone would ruin it on purpose.

It's more like... making a copy of a car from a car you've seen, which doesn't affect anyone as long as you just use it and don't try selling it...
it doesn't affect a particular person, it's more like affecting car making companies... I can't see them being too affected...

All of them are! Once they become available on DVD, they get uploaded onto the internet. Its impossible to stop. With internet speeds get faster (except Ireland) and faster all the time soon enough you'll be able to email a DVD rip to a friend.

Same quality as the theatrical release? Yeah, I guess....if you're borderline blind.

Well movies are generally released in the US months before here, so by the time they get to use, a lot of them are already set for DVD release in the states. It takes one person to get their hands on one dvd and rip and upload it onto the net, and everyone here has a perfect dvd copy of a film coming out in the cinemas. Add to this the amount of advanced dvd copies that get sent around (for all the oscar films for example), and there's no real need to watch a dodgy quality pirate film.
