Hi all! I'm new 'round here. :)

As the title says. I've got 5 years experience in IT support and systems/network administration, WAN links too(I'm currently working at an ISP) and two years in credit management and debt collection, I speak German and Italian as well. I'm currently in Italy but salaries here are pitiful. I've tried applying for jobs on monster, irishjobs, etc, the responses I've gotten have understandably been "we're only looking for candidates currently in Ireland". I'm thinking of getting to Dublin with cash to last me a month or two and hitting every recruitment agency I can find. How's the job market looking? Do I have a good chance of finding a job within a month? Apart from recruitment agencies, what are some large companies in the Dublin area I could try to hit as well?

PS. To be honest I'm a bit tired of IT work(of course if I find a good job in IT I'll keep it), any suggestion as to another line of work I could pursue given my previous work experience is predominantly in IT?

    Thanks for the tips!!

Try CPL (http://www.cpl.ie/), they recruit lots of people into technical support roles like yours.

When you come to Ireland, visit FÁS, they're a state-owned employment agency (http://www.fas.ie/en/). They will also have lots of jobs on offer.

HP are a company that directly recruit people in IT support roles

Be warned though, salaries for IT support work aren't good here. You're only going to be earning €19-22K a year. If you live frugally (don't drive/shop in Lidl/live in a tiny single room/etc) then you can get by on around €15K a year.

This depends on the level of support and the company. Some companies pay upwards of €25k for first level support. Others pay around €20k.
For second and third tier support, you should expect to be running into the €30k bracket (or more if it's a very specialised topic).

Into mid-senior network admin, you should be pushing €35-40k and so on.

I would say your first port of call is an Irish recruitment company. For IT jobs I would recommend CPL or Eolas (PM me if you want a name in there). Give them your CV, and ask them what they would expect to pitch you at. They won't really bull all that much - the more you get, the more they get, so they'll try and get you a good deal.

Once you know what you may be able to get, try to save up two months' pay at that level, before coming over. Finding a place to rent here is a nightmare. Dedicate a whole week when you get over, to having no fixed abode, and spending all day sitting in a web cafe and ringing people as soon as ads appear. Renting is also getting quite expensive, so you need to factor that into your move.

As for moving out of I.T., I guess the two years of credit management could get you into a position in a finance department of an I.T. company. It's really something you'd need to decide yourself :)

Thanks for all the replies. What other jobs give better salaries(25-30K)? I have no problem with manual labour if it pays good.

Are there better areas than Dublin(cost of living, employment)?
