It was a tad too much on the childish side for my liking. Gareth Roberts can be quite good - he brilliantly captures the 4th Doctor/Romana/K9 in his MA novels, but here it felt too forced. The Harry Potter references were particularly cringe-inducing, designed solely to appeal to the kids at home.

The explanation for how magic worked wasn't up to much either - no explaining why names worked once only, why they worked at all, et cetera. Could have made an attempt at least. Words as power is hardly a new concept but it doesn't gel so well in a science fiction series (even if the show is hardly a slavish adherent!)

Thing that really ruined this episode for me though was the references to Rose. Really felt that the Christmas episode should have moved us on from that. Instead we get it as the word that weakens the Doctor (what - even more than Gallifrey or Susan or Adric?!). He's also ignorant to how he talks to Martha, pining for Rose and making her a cheap replacement. Having her fancy him in turn is too corny.. what ever happened to the platonic companionships? RTD is obsessed with unrequited love in his shows!

Oh well, least I liked "Gridlocked".

It was what it was..filler. Not the best, not the worst. I agree the Harry Potter stuff was cringeworthy.

Didn't notice the Harry Potter stuff, because I'm cool and I don't read Harry Potter*, but yeah, not a great episode.

Really didn't like the witches at all.

    half-truths are truths too

as for the magic explanation RTD is surely referring to Arthur C Clarke's quote that "any sufficiently advanced technology would be indistinguishable to magic"

forgot about the Harry Potter references, but that was really in reply to ITV always running a Harry Potter flick against the first ep of each new Who season.... if the schedules had matched up (Who usually starts at easter but BBC were deliberatly moving it around to outfox ITV) this one would have gone out against the Potter film.

Nice to see that RTD is getting his priorities right, eh?

as for the Rose stuff.... look, it's OVER!!!! Get over it already!!!
