I'm the highest bidder on an item but the maximum bid I have put in to bid up to, I now want to withdraw/change this.
How can I do this without retracting the bid?

You mean you want to reduce your maximum bid, but the auction is not at your current max yet? I don't think you can revise down, only up. You could retract the bid and then re-bid with a new lower amount. That's if bid retraction is still available to you.

I presume you've tried to enter a new maximum bid already and it's failed?

You can retract unless it is too close to finishing time. When retracting I think sometimes you have to contact the seller or give a reason and you can get a "black mark" against your name. You do not get a warning/black mark if you say it is a typo. i.e. if you bid 100, retract saying it was a typo and bid in 10. This typo retreaction might have a time limit.

Just go to ebay and type in retract in the help.
