Heading to South America for a month in July/August. Going to visit Peru, Bolivia, Chile and maybe Argentina. I've used lonely planet guides a lot in the past but the only condensed guide for South America is a shoestring one which doesn't suit and I don't want to spend over €100 on seperate ones. Looks like the Rough Guide might be an option but I've never really liked the Rough Guide. So I just wanted to ask advice from anyone else who has been there and what guide book option they went with.

The new Rough Guide for S.A will not be out until the beginning of 2008. (which I love!), however the current edition hasn't had great reviews.

The supposed best guide is the Footprints one - it is the original guide for S.A and is updated every year. I bought a brand new one on ebay last week for 1.99 GBP.

I haven't been yet - going at the end of the year, we plan to use Footprints and then just add in details from the web before we go. You'd be mad to invest 100 quid on books when they'll be out of date by the time you buy them! You'll also be able to pick up second hand ones after you arrive if you can hold out until then.

I'd like to try and read up on stuff before I go so I won't wait till I get there. I'll check out that footprints one. Cheers for the pointer dude
