I have been running for nearly 4 months at this stage and when I started out I ran with a buddy but he has stopped now so I have to go alone. I have my ipod with me but I find myself getting bored on the run. The music does nothing for me anymore. Any advice how to keep the old mind concentrating and stimulated.

change the pace. If you're running hard enough to need to concentrate on not falling over you won't get bored.

You could try joining a running club.

You could also try buying an audio book instead of music.

Actually look at posts 3-6 in this thread. Apparently they are running podcasts, I don't know if they'll be useful or not but no harm listening to them anyway.

Failing that, do go for the audiobook option :)

Arrange your music so that you run in time with it. This is a good way of changing the pace of a run.

i.e. start off with a tune where your left leg hits the ground at the start of each bar (a bar = you counting 1, 2, 3, 4) at a moderate pace. The next song increases the speed a bit, the next a bit too... etc. Arrange as you like. Should prove interesting for you if you select random play order too.

Hope that is clear. Just don't pick any waltzs ;)

    Advice:

Change the course you run so that you do not get bored with the same run
Run on different terrains: cross-country/grass/road/sand for a change
Run at different times of the day to get a different perspective on your runs
Find another run-buddy [lots of these in a running club]

Set yourself a goal to participate in a race, like the Addidas 5 mile that is coming up soon in the Phoenix Park. If you've a goal and lots of will-power, then you'll keep on running.

I run as part of the www.bhaa.net races. You just need your organisation to join to participate. It's great craic and prizes too.

Will-power is key. If you like running, then that should not be a problem.

    enjoy
