My laptop is getting as far as the Windows XP screen and then gets no further, it doesn't power off, the screen just goes blank. I recently installed netlimiter to monitor apps using the internet, not sure if that was the cause or not though, anybody any ideas plz.

You could depending on your level of experience 1) Boot to repair console from XP CD and manually repair what looks like a corrupt registry (Leaving your data intact) or 2) Run a Refresh / Repair of the operating system again from the CD (leaving your data intact) or 3) Wipe the system perform a clean install and restore your data from backup:D or 4) Bring it to someone who does know how to repair it and recover any data not contained in your backup.

Common problem I believe, the file could be corrupt. Another site suggests apart from the above, to load the default settings in the BIOS (press DEL, F2, some other key when the laptops starts).

I'm booting to the repair console, and it's looking for an administrator password? I haven't set any admin password  I went into the BIOS settings to set a simple one and see if this would work, all to no avail :(. Any ideas?

EDIT:- Just dawned on me it's probably looking for the normal xp admin password, since this was purchased from Dell it was just automatically booting in, I've no idea what admin password they set, doh!

Well if it is not blank then it must have been set at some point. Dell don't set it.

For the life of me I can't remember settign a passowrd, but maybe I did, this is the normal windows xp password it's expecting isn't it?

I've tried most of my usual passwords, I'll have to try some more and see if it works.

Thanks for your help so far btw, much appreciated.

Try a single spacebar as the password.

Nah that didn't work either, I have tried all the usual suspects like password, admin, administrator, test, dell.

I don't know if this is relevant or not, but the system is XP Home(Didn't get the disc from Dell), but the disc I have is XP Pro(My Main PC). I would have thought I could have booted from the Pro disc but maybe I'm wrong, could his be the real issue?

If nothing comes to mind in the next few days I'm jsut going to reinstall windows.

Anyway thanks for your help, much appreciated.
