How much time have you to spend?

What type of holiday are you looking for?

I haven't been to Vancouver but just came back from Boston where I had been over (for my third time) visiting family.
While it's a fine city, 2/3 days would be enough there. After that you either grab a car and visit the countryside of New England, Cape Cod and the olde-worlde towns or you grab a train and 3 hours later find yourself in New York City :)

To be honest, Boston can seem a little too like at home at times what with all the Irish bars that are pretty much EVERYWHERE.

While it's your decision, I'd much prefer to leave Ireland to go somewhere that there was no Oirish :)

You'll be bored in Boston after 3 days I'd say unless you use it as a base, hire a car and visit the surrounding towns. If you haven't already been to NYC then going to Boston without popping down would almost be a sin.

Was in Vancouver a few years ago, very nice city with friendly people. Two very different cities.

yeah i was in Vancouver last summer for 3 months living there. I absolutely loved it, the people are extremely friendly, even the homeless people are more than willing to help you if your kind to them!!! It's a great city and it's easy to spend a couple of days in. If you do find yourself getting bored and you're up for a good back-packing experience then there are some excellent tours run by Moose ( http://www.moosenetwork.com ) which go to Vancouver Island as well as into the Rockies and the Ski resort of Whistler. All of these are great experience, especially if you're travelling with only the two of you as it is really group oriented and you'll meet some cool people including the drivers!

Having said that i've never been to Boston so i can't really comment on it and although there are a few Irish people in Vancouver (where aren't there!) there definetly aren't as many as Boston. Obviously flights to Vancouver will be a fai bit dearer and the flight is about 10 hours but it's definetly worth it in my opinion. I'd go back in an instant. Feel free to ask anything about it.

Definitally Vancouver, quality of life much better, I stayed in both citys in the 90ies, Scenery and wildlife around Vancouver is amaising, you can actually pet tame racoons & skunks in Stanley park!. as someone already mentioned you would see Boston in three days.

Vancouver would a much nicer and friendlier city but be aware that the weather is similar to Ireland in the summer. That may not be an issue for you but it would for some people!
