I can always go up to the botanics if I want some shutter-fodder, because there's always something new to shoot - or round Glendalough, that little graveyard and ruined church are a macro-er's delight. I also had a great time in Trinity on Saturday wandering about shooting those little details, and I'm sure there are more visits still to be had in it...

Do you have a favourite place or subject that you can rely on to keep giving you inspiration, when you can't think of somewhere new to try?

Too hard to call, but if I was pushed it would be the back wall of coumshingaun in the Comeraghs. I seem to have an affinity for that place.

Locally, the Clare Glens always throws up something I haven't seen before. Apart from that, anywhere on the coast and I'm happy!

Down around James' Gate in Dublin is really nice. Nice mix of old buildings and flats and stuff like that.
Or the old swimming baths in both Dun Laoghaire and Blackrock. Although Blackrock is a tad harder to get into.
    Smithfield market is good too.

There are loads of places I've thought about but have yet to get to. They're a secret :D

Lucan village where the weir is and on the back road from there at the canal opposite the turn for westmanstown. Its really nice in the evening at the canal. Sun sets in line with it, still water and lots of Dragonflies.

Hmmm some very good ideas there :D My evil plan to discover your secret locations has worked, muhahaha :p

Borderfox, that sounds excellent. I've been wondering if there was a good place to head for sunset not too far out of town.

I also keep meaning to head up to the area round James Gate... I must admit, I'm hugely influenced by the holga picture from up there by Eddie Malin. Speaking of which, I was wondering just where to find this place too...

I think Connamara even though I haven't been there for years.

there's a weir down beside the wren's nest too; though it's taken a bit of damage, and might not photograph as well now.

Both of these places are only 5 minutes away, there is a set of steps on the lucan side of the bridge that you can walk down (checking of course for any no-goods waiting to hit you on the head) There is a small amount of parking before and after the canal bridge. I will see if I can locate it on google. Two nice locations including water one flowing and the other very still and excellent for reflections.

Excellent thread, its amazing sometimes you cant think of places to go and take pictures. Maybe a sticky? so Elven can collect all her new places and complete photo domination of the Boards. :) there is another weir just outside Navan off the Slane road on the Boyne. Really beautiful, I have to go up again and get some more shots. You have to watch out for the beer swillers though.

    Heres the weir at lucan

Was that a good enough photo domination evil laugh you think?

If we were going to be really fancy about it, we could edit our posts to include links to pictures from the places mentioned. I'll do mine at lunchtime.

Malahide Estuary early in the morning or at dusk, since it's a pretty place and also within a mile of me gaff ;)

Got some great shots here over the years including the majority of the shots in my foggy@6am set and also this one - my only 'explore' shot on flickr and also my most viewed&faved.

    forgive the shameless self-linking ;)

Excellent shot m_stan. Thats an excellent place too.

one problem with the mountains is that it can be hard to get good early morning or late evening light, as the sun usually disappears behind the mountains long before sunset.

Smithfield. Great for B&W (and IR as Fajitasqr so ably demonstrated)

For some reason Phoenix park does nothing for me. I've gone through entire rolls up there and got maybe one or two trite little shots. My fault obviously, but I just can't seem to get anything out of the place.

When I'm back home, around Dublin, my favourite areas are down at the seafront, particularly Sandymount. Also, there are some nice opportunities to be found out around the gardens at Powerscourt. And when in Belfast, the Lagan Valley provides an alternative to the H&W cranes.

I dislike Dublin as a spot to shoot, every pic I take seems to have many industrial elements. One place I like is motorways.

At this time of the year, and especially in this weather, its hard to beat a trip down to the local woods. Bluebell season is just about to start and when you add in the smell of the wild garlic and the bird song there is something for all the senses.

    One from last year.

Class Nilhg! Where was that wood?

I know I said Connamara but you know I didn't really mean it.

This is overloadI know but there are a fair few from my spot here and here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,185 ✭✭✭nilhg

The wood is a couple of miles from my front door at Kilanthomas, about one mile from Rathangan, Co. Kildare. Its owned by Coillte who have to be given great credit for the work they have one to make it a (free) public resource.

Most of the pictures on my Flickr are geotagged so if anyone feels like trying for themselves, the necessary directions are there.

West Cork - because it's closer than most of the Dublin locations! - in general.
Baltimore; Lough Ine; Castletownsend; Union Hall; Surfers/beaches at Garrettstown, Castlefreake and Inchydoney; Bere island (old fortifications, battered cars...); Glengarriff and garnish island..... in particular.

Ooooo I'm so there! That church in Castletownsend - I tried so hard to get the Harry Clarke windows but was still on film then and they came out all blurry :(

My other half is currently sitting on Inchydoney beach. He just called me to rub it in  Bloody gorgeous spot. Not as nice as west Kerry though :p

    I need a holiday!

C'mere, girl. there are a few West Cork poeple on here, that you don't want to go upsetting! You could find your Cork Visa being revoked, very quickly! :p

Anyone who's down that way, should check out Castlefreake.

It's near the Long Strand, which really is, a very LONG strand! :)

glendalough is lovely - not a patch on Scotland though ; )

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,966 ✭✭✭elven

sshhhhhht, we don't want to upset the locals!

Donegal - the glenveagh area, seems quite close to the landscape on the west coast of scotland. I really want to get back up there soon, the only time I was there with a camera it was raining hard, and so dull I coudn't handhold :( It has a different beauty in those conditions but makes shooting far too difficult...
