    Cheaper than what?

    The mac web site?
I don't think there is such a place for brand new mac pro's.
Have you tried the refurb part of the mac store website?

Do you want a second hand one?

The resale margins are pathetic on Apple equipment and as a result you will rarely see discounts that are genuine.

If you are looking to save money, your options are:

    1) Used
    2) Refurbished
    3) Trip to NY. But this involves being naughty with customs.

If you somehow qualify for the educational discount you could save a few bob.

Get a VAT number and claim 21% back. Saved me over €250.:D

Not I'm saying to do anything illegal here, but if you are Vat registered it's an option

apple have a agreement with all resellers of a minumum price they can sell current models for. so therefore you cannot get an up top date model cheaper than form apple directly. the agreement is generally the price apple advertises

Move to Cork and get friendly with their staff - they get a 27% discount!

Buy from Apple's online refurb store. The Mac Pro is going there for a 10-20% discount. You can access it on www.apple.com/iestore/ (it's the refurb store on the lower right column)

If someone claims back 21% on vat, do they get it back straight away or is it when they do their end of year tax returns? I have a friend who may be able to help me out but just curious as to the ins and outs before l ask. With regard to buying one in the US, I'm assuming that people have had friends or family bring them back, getting one shipped over even if it was marked as a gift would be a no go with customs.

    I can advise you here.
My Dad is self-employed and registered for Vat. So I purchased a macbook, mighty mouse and a few other items from a 3G store
I asked for a VAT receipt and supplied my Dad's name. He paid with a business cheque and I then paid him back myself.

You have pay in full and you claim it back then. If you want to wait until the end of the tax year that's fine, but our accountant does this every two months. Just ask the shop for a VAT receipt or if you're buying direct, Apple are well used to this and will suppy what you need.

Note: Not advising VAT fraud here so ensure you know what you're doing.

Thanks for replying micmclo, l was thinking l could give him the money & he'd order it online for me, dunno if that makes a difference. He was to bring me back the double layer white macbook from Hong kong but the trip had to be cancelled for a few months so I'm just trying to think of a way to get one within my budget quicker. If he's not ok with it then I'll just go for the combo drive from the education store.

u can always replace the combo-drive for a super-drive in a month or two when u get more cash anyway.
