PS3 Noise Levels

I know this question is doing the rounds on other forums - just wanted to get a feeling from people who bought in Ireland what there PS3 'fan' noise is like ?

I bought one today in Dublin and when powered up it is as good as silent, maybe a small whirlling noise. But after 5 mins the fan cranks up to levels I would compare to my old fat PS2. I tried to watch a standard DVD on it, but could here the console over the movie.

Anyone else out there with simialar problems or did I just get unlucky ?

Mine is quieter than my DVD players. I only ever notice any sort of noise if I've had it on for over 5 hours, and even then it's pretty quiet. Quieter than my laptop, which I can tell if I've left it on by accident when going to sleep from across the room. The only time I ever realise that my PS3 has been making any noise is when I turn it off, and notice the silence. Have never heard it when playing a game, watching a movie or anything else.

0ubliette - do you mind me asking you what the serial number and batch number of the one you bought yesterday and was it in one of the major 'game' stores ?

I am going to exchange mine today - hopefully will get a quiet one :)

I got mine in Game in the Dundrum shopping center yesterday. My details are below. I am not in front of console now, but it is in the '555????' range

Revision 1.50 - you will get this in the system info tab in the XMB
Serial P-27430420-555????-CECHC03 (should be on the box or on the back of console)

Have had my machine since launch, and it has been incredibly quiet, fan only starts to kick in after a couple of hours use, and even then it's very quiet.
Is this a thing that would make or break a purchase though?

I did not play a game on it yesterday, so I can only presume it will get louder - so I not sure if this would annoy me.

But I paid €630 for it, of which the Blu-Ray drive is probably worth €300. If I cant watch movies in peace, it is an overpriced bad buy.

The PS3 is no louder or intrusive than the high-end Toshiba XE1 HD-DVD player, so I think you'll be alright for HD movie viewing..

Well I tried to watch 'Pulp Fiction' last night and could here the fan. It may not annoy some people - but it would do my head in :(

Unless the fan is faulty you have no grounds to return the console.* Just so you know.
    I could be wrong

Just got my second PS3 - same issue. Fan can be heard over movie. Returning it again - third time lucky maybe.

I've never really noticed my fan being anywhere near what I'd classify as loud, 360 is way louder. Then again I always have my ps3 connected to my surround sound system... have you tried turning up the volume on your tv?

    Check your cooling Mick,
if possible stand the console vertically and give it plenty of room to breathe (try not to have it behind glass either) as the hot air will be expelled from the top and right side of the machine.
It is not a completely silent machine, and there are probably 3 fan speeds, but even on full whack it shouldn't approach 360 levels.
Forums were awash with people replacing machines because they could hear the PS3......some were probably louder than others and some people have different expectations......but on the whole the machines they got back were of a similar level.
If its louder than a 360, I would suggest there maybe an issue with the machine (and your right to get a replacement) or your cooling method, if its below 360 level, its probably about right.

Personally, I'm extremely sensitive to noise levels, whether thats from the 360, PS3, Wii, PC, SkyHD blah,blah,blah.......so I understand your pain, hope it works out for ya..

Sony say it it quieter then the Slim PS2 - mine is as loud as the fat PS2. A friend of mine says his makes NO noise at all. The fan cranks up just viewing the XMB - surely this is wrong.

I have it on top of a table, nothing sorounding it and have tried it its side.

If it were just a game console, I wouldnt even being on here - but if I am to watch movies on this thing I want it silent like they say it should be

Even though I think your PS3 has a problem, even when my PS3's fan is going full speed, I never hear it over my movie or game, you must seriously have the volume on your TV very low, if not, and you're still struggling to hear your TV over your PS3, then there may well be some sort of problem alright.
