Lone Trees

I was driving along a road earlier with my mum, and she pointed out a tree to me. It was in the middle of a field, all on its own with no other trees around it. It was the only tree in the field and I said that it was unusual that a farmer wouldnt have cut it down so he could maximise the use of his field. My said that apparently all farmers know NOT to do this as it is bad luck and that these trees are supposedly called Fairy Trees?

Anybody know any supposed information on these trees?

There are diffrent prohibitions in reguards to the different types of trees and thier placement.

Not all trees have such things attched to them some of the trees in grazing flieds are there to provide shade for the cattle/sheep.

There are loads of myths, legends and superstitions about Fairy Trees, The White Goddess by Robert Graves is one of the best books I read about mystical trees. Also the Celtic Tree Zodiac that names different sections of the year after a specific tree. As Thaedy says seeing a lone tree doesnt always mean it's a fairy tree. The Hawthorn is well known, lots of farmers and builders won't dig them up when developing land but a lot of that is just superstition.
