Meet the Parents

My girlfriends parents are over from Canada and she wants me to meet them, i thought I'd be seeing them this afternoon but it appears they're having ''supper'' at 8pm tonight. Now i love my weekends and don't really fancy using up my Sunday night feeling awkward around a dinner table you know? I was hoping it would be a bit more casual. So i think I'll give it a miss tonight and see them mid week instead. Something tells me my girlfriend won't appreciate this haha.

So does anyone have any stories (funny or otherwise) of when they first met the ''in-laws'' so to speak?

I'd say the supper is as informal as you're gonna get. This way, you're only looking at an hour or two tops. Otherwise, they'll drop in on some weekday... after you're home from work. And I'd say you'd want to relax then!

I've been with my boyfriend almost 2 years and I have met his mother once....for about twenty minutes when he moved into the apartment in Dublin :o

    I've never met his dad.

I guess it's kind of bad considering he knows my parents so well, but in my defence, they live in Limerick, we live in Dublin, they own 5 cats and I'm very allergic.

My inlaws are American and met them there. First time I met them was before we were married, that went okay and nothing much said and I was back a few months later to tell my mother in law that we were getting married.
She asked me if I had asked for permission and I couldn't help but laugh a little. I had never really heard of that before apart from on telly. :p All went well in the end anyway, never any problems with them thank heavens.
Go to the supper and get it over with. :)

I remember when I met my girlfriends parents. I was collected from the bus station by her mum (and my gf, of course) and on the way home she ran into the back of the car in front.

    Quite informal, really :)

Better it suck now, when they expect to see you, rather than have it suck later and for them to know that you blew them off tonight...

First time meeting ex-gf's folks. She warned me they were uber-relgious. Fair enough.

We all sit down for lunch. Me grabs the fork and knife, hits the plate and halfway through chewing I suddenly notice her Dad, with head bowed, going "Lord, for what we are about to receive...".

Just that the dinner was so nice I had several helping and was really shuffling it into me. Suddenly I noticed the table has gone quiet and the GF family is just sitting there, watching me stuffing my cake hole. I tried to get a "it's good" out but had too much food in my mouth. GF wasn't impressed.

First time I met the MIL, I fell drunk off a barstool in her quaint little pub in rural France. Much to the amusement of the local football team. Didnt know her son was the one I met in the nightclub a few days before.

First time meeting my bird's parents - she was 18, I was 20, on the scratcher and decked out in biker jacket, black jeans, long hair and smig - was the day after her parents had received an anonymous phonecall telling them that she had been bringing some guy into the house when they weren't there.
She wasn't allowed have a boyfriend, you see.
After the phonecall, her dad confronted her and asked her if she, his little golden princess, had been ridin' me... to which she replied 'yes'! (I still can't believe she said yes.)

Within 10 mins of meeting her dad, he warned me not to get her preggers and said he would take me to court if I DID get her preggers and do a runner.

Total nightmare... but then, I guess he considered me to be a nightmare boyfriend so it's fair enough. :)

I've a nasty history of first time meeting folks, met my first serious girl friends parents one night when i was 15 by accident at a party in her house that they where meant to be away for, i show up at the door jet black hair down to me ass, leather jacket, leather pants, bullet belt, crate of 24 cans on my shoulder and an inverted cross necklace, an i just ring the door bell an they answer to me an my 4 biggest hairiest dirtyest mates grinning like a bunch of mechanics who'd just won the pools, woulda been bad enough but they where quakers, they seemd ok about it but we broke up the next week hahahaha.

then when i was 18 my new girlfriend brings me back home and we wind up crashing on the couh bed down stairs, needless to say we where pretty drunk and fell asleep afterwards, next morning i wake up to her mother waking into the room she just sez hi and glares at me, we get up and go into the sitting room and everything seems fine then the ma comes down stairs walks into the sitting room turns off the tv an just goes "right you too, if you ever hurt my daughter ill kill you do you understand?" no " hi my names blah blah" we wound up great mates and wound up engeged to that girl for two years living with the ma.
current girlfriends parents seem to think im some drug addeled satanist whose intenet on corrupting their 25 year old daughter becuase i have long hair, pack of muppets.

I met my gf's parents and then we had sex in her bedroom :D

but seriously, there should be no problem about meeting the "in-laws". Just act yourself and show affection towards their son/daughter.

Talk a bit. No parent wants their son/daughter with a guy who is boring. Treat the parents like your parents.

I have somehow managed to meet the parents of a few of my girlfriends (obviously ex's now), the last parents before my current g/f were finnish and didn't have a word of english (and I have no finnish). The mother took quite a shin on me and would always have my favourite foods, cakes and pancakes ready whenever we travelled up to their city.
I met my current g/f's parents in NanJing railway station, Im a bit slow to warm up to people (in other words a handshake is all I greet people with unless they are good friends/relatives who I havent seen in ages). It was a crowded area where all the arrivals are funnelled through a small gate and into a big crowd of waiting people. Her parents were in the crowd and I was carrying a big bag, they hurridly ran up to us he father grabbed me and gave me a stiff hug, then pulled the bag off me and unfolded a little trolley. I was trying to figure out what he was doing (Im not told anything), when her mum grabbed me and gave me a hug. Jia (my g/f) explained who they were and we were off to her home in 35 degree heat :D I got on great with her parents, I always just called them mama and baba, they seemed to get a kick out of that.
Hopefully they will still be so nice to me next March when we go back for the wedding :)

PS OP I really hope you went to that supper, it keeps your girlfriend happy and should be an easier atmosphere

When I went to Poland with the GF for the first time I think I must have met the whole family. I couldn't speak Polish and her folks couldn't speak english but they were really friendly and made me feel really welcome.
Met them a few times now and they are much more welcoming to me than my own folks to her.

There was no real formal "meeting" of my girlfriend's parents. The night I met her, I got a lift home from her Dad, and I think I met her Mum a week or two later on one of my trips to her house. Apart from getting grilled from her Mum on, "So what do you want to do in life?"*, there was no real awkwardness.

*I had no answer to this. Who does? I was 17. It was stopped by my girlfriend saying, "Leave him alone will you for God's sake!".

So, OP, did you bite the bullet and go?
