XP Pro And Refusal to Auto Load Drivers

Got new laptop DELL M90 which I had to downgrade to windows xp pro sp2 to run some microsoft development tools which were incompatible with vista.

If i plug in a new device even a usb keyboard or mouse the system goes away and looks as if it is trying to download the appropriate drivers. After a period of time, it comes back and says 'cannot intall this hardware'. Internet connection is working fine and this was not a problem under vista.

I have set windows to download a driver where needed under control panel, system, hardware, Windows update but with no joy.

Any help on this would be really appreciated as it is annoying the hell out of me and preventing me attaching all my lovely devices to my spanking new piece of kit.

Try going to the manufacturer web site for the drivers instead of MS

XP more than often cannot find a driver and Dell lappies use all sorts of stuff that will be specific to the model. Use the Dell support site and enter the Service Tag (should be on a label on the bottom of the laptop)...this will take you to pages specific for your unit. Should be links to update drivers/software and also warrenty information.
