The Others are too human now as someone else on boards put it. Perhaps the Others are simply a weird cult and Jacob is their leader.

For the sake of LOST i really hope it is not that basic.

Jacob enters the Old Testament in the twenty-fifth chapter of Genesis. He is the brother of Esau, the younger son of Rebecca and Isaac and the grandson of Abraham and Sarah. While Esau wandered off to hunt (a "man of the field"), Jacob stayed put with his parents and tended the sheep. Jacob, though devoted to God, was a bit of a cheater: he conned his brother out of his birthright and got his father's blessing by pretending to be Esau. This deception made Jacob fear that God would allow Esau to come and kill him. During a marathon prayer session, Jacob was visited by a "Man" with whom he wrestled. They wrestled all night, and at one point the Man touched Jacob's hip and it miraculously went out of whack. Jacob realized he was communicating with God and felt rotten about what he'd done in his life. In spite of his flaws, or because of his persistence, Jacob was chosen by God to continue the patriarchal line that became the nation of Israel. Jacob ended up having two wives and twelve children (the roots of the twelve tribes of Israel).

Extra credit: Jacob named the place where the wrestling happened the Peniel ("face of God").

Oh the thought of LOST having a deep religious theme gives me nightmares.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 685 ✭✭✭darrenh

having read wikipedia on jacob the biblical figure, it appears he might of been a great man but he was also a liar and decepted people. if the writers of lost are not using his name to explain the character just like locke and desmond ill be surprised.

You guys all think that LOST is about religion and all the references to God? I am just curious to see how many of you think it will end up that way?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,178 ✭✭✭kevmy

I don't think it will end up being a show with deep religious or philosophical overtones but as we seen from parts of it the names of people and places do crop up in the Bible and in philosiphy. Now they might use these names to describe the persons character or there relationship to other characters in the show (ie. in the bible Benjamin is Jacob's son). However in the grand scheme of things you could probably know nothing about these things but find Lost equalling compelling (or repelling, depending on your stance)

Do any of you guys know when Jacob was first referred to. I get confused easily but I only remember the name popping up in the Juliet flash back on RTE2 last Monday (April 16)

Yes, i agree with you on that. I hope that it is just the writers making references to characters from the bible. Within the first 10 eps of season 1 people came out with theories about religion and puratory and the writers denied it.

i cant really say whether it has anything to do about religion at all. i just think they are based on people in histroy and there ideas.

    But whats your gut feeling?

people would say that if the answers were all religious it would ruin lost and it would not be believable but then why do billions of people have religious beliefs.
if at the end or even some stage there is some god like person/moment, people would ridicule Lost and say it was unbelievable. but why would it be unbelievable? after all most people have some faith no matter how big or small.

Was it not towards the end of Season 2 we heard his name mentioned for the first time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,713 ✭✭✭✭Sad Professor

Jacob was first mentioned by name in 3x06 by Pickett who said Jack "wasn't even on Jacob's list".

However it's believed Jacob may also have been the Him Ben referred to in 2x18, "If I tell you about them, you don't know what he'll do," and again in 2x20, he's "a great man, a brilliant man, but not a forgiving man." But it's also been suggested (even by TPTB) that Ben may have been talking about himself.

I'm pretty sure it's been confirmed that "Him" is Jacob.

Aye but i think we are to take it that it is Jacob they are referring to.

According to the latest podcast, we haven't seen Jacob in an episode yet. So, congrats to the other 21 people who voted other.

No, i don't believe so :). I think the Jacob character is from the mainland and just influences it from there.

That'd make a bit more sense alright. Like, if Jacob was meant to take care of Juliette's sister himself, surely the only way of doing so would be if he was on the mainland.

i saw this guy was rumoured to be jacob, most likely foiler tho i'd say !!

    I'll font it anyways,

That info has been confirmed as a hoax, bobbyc. But man it would be so cool if it were true :).

Im sure the name"Jacob" while religious is a methaphor for someone or something else. Lost being a biblical tale seem silly to me

Exactly mate. It looks like Ben is number one on the Island and this Jacob character is the main leader operating from the real world.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,713 ✭✭✭✭Sad Professor

Of course it could be that there is no Jacob (or he is dead) and Ben is pretending that he still lives to maintain control.

The title of episode 3x20 would indicate that some manner of con is going on.
"I am the great and powerful Oz!"

I'm starting to think this is the case. Jacob seems too huge a figure to be real, he makes lists, cures cancer, is magnificent, etc, just like the Wizard of Oz. There someone hiding behind that curtain.

Speaking of Oz, remember the name of Dorothy Gale's uncle? Uncle Henry.

    :D

A lot of thought went behind the name Henry Gale so. Not only is it a reference to Wizard of Oz but it is also an anagram - Henry Gale Minnesota is an anagram for See Another Man Lying.

Could Jakob not be the name of the other guy that met Juliette first?

You mean Richard Alpert? He clearly works for Ben.

And yet "Henry Gale" clearly worked for someone else. Nothing is ever clear on the island. I'm probably totally wrong, but its a fair guess as we do know that he did leave the island after Juliette arrived (I think? Can anyone confirm it?)

Yeah but he's currently on the island. We saw him in 3x13, Ben told him to get the "man from Tallahassee" and he released Locke at the end.
