Frontier: Elite II

I'm not a massive gamer but I used to play Frontier: Elite II a good bit when I was younger and recently got a version running on my computer with the aid of Dosbox. The thing is, the game is great imo but the graphics are hideous! Does anyone know of a very PC similar game with better graphics? Or even (god forbid) a re-released re-engineered version of the original game?

Could a mod please move this if it's not in the right place?

    Thanks, Jack.

Edit: Forgot to mention, I've taken a look at First Encounters but I don't know if that's as "flash" as I want it either :-s

I was just thinking about this mod. Only shame is it replaces the original panel with a new one. You should also grab the enchanced sound files while your at it.
Listening to the real 'Blue Danube' as apposed to the midi version is a treat.

Try the trial of Eve online. I found it very "elite" like, only thing is the combat is more down to your equipment rather than you flying your ship and shooting enemies yourself.

I've played a trial account twice now but haven't taken the plunge to subscribe, but as an elite fan I liked the similarities.

I tried eve but i didn't like it to be honest. It just took to long to move up to another ship. I also loved the way Frontier used some real stars and gave detailed profiles on planets and systems.

Hmmm... Must give that GL Frontier FE a shot - was a huge fan of the Amiga version - had a nice fast processor in there so even though there weren't any textures, the framerate made it a joy to play. Ah, nostalgia... I must dig that out over the weekend actually!

yeah the Amiga version was superior to the PC version and of course they couldn't patch the 400ly bug :)

You can d/l the Amiga for use with an emulator afaik.

    Have you tried X3 Reunion?

Just be aware that X3 has some aggressive anti copying stuff going on, it'll install software that may affect your optical drives and general PC performance.

I have been a huge fan of Elite and all its clones throughout the years and X3 IMHO is one of the better games in this genre.

I would probably forget about doing the main story missions (which you can delve into whenever you want) just playing in the X3 universe is amazing.

I started small now I have a completey automated mining operation and factories and small fleet of ships! really it's great stuff....

    John.

The last patch removes starforce apparently. I've only played X2 and thought it was pretty good but it had a lot of bugs and my PC at the time probably wasn't really up to the job when things got busy on screen:)
