Looking for advice on anyone that has worked on a 1988 GIXR 750, Its the short stroke slingshot model, Cam chain is a bit noisy, has anyone ever worked on them? are they self ajust? If it was to be replaced is it an easy job?

The chain should be self adjust , if you are replacing the chain you need to count teeth between the cam wheels on some models.... unlike other bikes (usually have nice marks on them )

It's and engine out and split the crankcases job...........not that bad compared to some newer bikes, but take yer time.............

You can get split chains , tie new chain onto old one to bring it around and join it up.

Sounds more logical than dropping the block and splitting the cases. Ill look into it.

..split chains, fine, but won't last anything like as long as an OE chain. Can't remember (it's been a while), but can the slipper pad be changed without splitting the cases..........mmmmm, not so sure about that.........

It might only be the slipper pad, Theres only 30,000 genuine miles up on the bike which is not much. I had a gsx750f before which sounded much worse. Cheers for the advise on split chains, I think I would go for the best system. Im not on for taking any short cuts particularly with valve timing. I would probably give the split chain a miss.
