Been there twice, an absolute cracker of a city, DON'T go to any of the Irish bars as they are crap generally, stick to the tapas bars and do your eating there as well, they are great value and fun, don't expect to get much sleep either as the bars and clubs pretty much open all night, the local beers and wines are fairly good and I found them pretty cheap although prices vary. Get a map of the metro (it's pretty easy to figure out) and use it to get around, tickets cost €1 and will get you anywhere in the city, the royal palace is well worth a visit and it was free in when I was there. Look forward to a great weekend and enjoy ;) (jammy bugger)

Don't miss Reina Sofía Museum also: The Prado Museum, Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor, Retiro Park, Royal Palace, Fountains of Cibeles and Jupiter, Puerta de Alcala.

Grab a Chocolate con Churros after a nite out - unreal stuff.

    Great city, you'll love it.

    What he said..

Trust me even if the weathers crap you'll be having too much crack to notice. And by the way in a lot of the smaller cafe's if you ask for a latte they won't know what your talking about, so ask for a "Cafe con leche" (sp ?) ;) let us know what you think when you get back !

Have you guys been to a Real Madrid matches ? They are playing Valencia that weekend just wondering how much, and is it easy to get tickets ?
Actually is it an expensive city in general and any nice places to stay ?

We stayed in this place, smack bang in the center of Madrid

Can't remember the prices but it was reasonable, as far as being expensive ? For food and drink no I found it very cheap, were talking fifty € will get you fed and hammered for the night in a pretty good tapas bar with change for a kebab on the way back to the hotel. There were no matches on the weekend I was there but we did the tour of the stadium, I think it cost about €8 interesting if your into that kind of thing.

Sorry about that it was only about 90 each with four of us sharing a room for four nights last november, that's a hell of a jump, but if you can find anything in the same general area you will be within walking distance of most of the interesting spots.

    muppetkiller,
Here's the website that I've used for booking hotels in madrid

    http://www.ratestogo.com/SearchResults.asp?inDate=2007-4-20&inWkd=%28Fri%29&lenStay=3&outDate=2007-4-23&outWkd=%28Mon%29&country=Spain&star5=on&star4=on&city=Madrid&hotelName=&suburb=Old+Quarter&ShowAll=0&specCity=Madrid

They've got a double/twin for in Cason del Tormes Hotel for eur 284 for 3 nights right in centre of Madrid. Might be worth checking it out.

    Enjoy the city... Tis great!

I'm heading at the beginning of June and found this nice looking Hostel. I didn't book it through their website directly, after a bit of searching the site below is what it was cheapest on. €250 for 3 nights at the beginning of June so won't complain!
Let us know how it goes, I'll be looking for some tips myself. Enjoy!

San Lorenzo Hostal Madrid. The site I got the cheapest quote from was Bookings.com
