    Any thoughts?

I got some Millers stuff last time out from a guy in Dublin, who has since vanished.

I want a good quality mineral multigrade. In Limerick ideally.

Depending on the car, generally Castrol GTX 15W40 (high mileage) is fine.
I wouldnt be using any Halfords own products.

No. It absolutely has to be a high quality 20w50 mineral oil.

I used Castrol GTX 20w50 years ago. Can't find it now.

    Car is a 1979 Ford Escort RS2000 btw.ostd06200421.jpg

Ouch... why is Halfords own oil not well regarded ?

I use it in my MG, and my Stags before that (tried 15w40 Magnatec in one Stag and ended up with oil leaking everywhere - inside the engine and out - but 20w40 Halfords was fine)

I've used the Halfords Classic Oil for a year or so.
Nothin' blown up on me yet.

As far as I can see, Castrol 20W50 has now become 15W40- perfectly fine for old engines.

I use Duckhams mineral 20/50w oil for my BMW 2002 tii. Seems to come highly recommended. Cheaper than the halfords stuff too.

I get it only in certain motor factors such as CPL in Maynooth, another one whose name i forget in Celbridge.

For dublin northsiders, Consort motor parts in Drumcondra and Artane also stock this oil.

Don't know about the southside, but anywhere that stocks Duckhams car oils should have this in stock.

Any decent motor factor should have some 20w50 oils. The last time I got some in a motor factors, they pointed out to me that the oil was for old cars only!

I use Duckhams or Castrol oils. I don't have a problem getting them at motor factors in Cork

OT but I was thinking about getting some 20-50 as a cheap way of hushing a lazy hydraulic lifter.

    UPDATE.

I found some Duckhams Q 20W/50 in Limerick Motor Factors in Parnell Street. Owner will restock it too.

€17 for 4.5litres seemed a keen price too.

What are the benefits of Duckhams over Castrol GTX?

20 50 should be used for most older cars...anything thinner is not suitable. My local factor sells it and is cheap too.I change it more often than is recommended too....

I agree completely. Factors had "off the shelf" 20W50, but I wanted a recognised brand.

The wider tolerances used in these older engines means an oil which is relatively thick both cold and hot must be used.

Not sure the differences between Duckhams Q, GTX, or Millers tbh. As long as the are a good quality mineral based oil, they will all do the job fine.

My engine is stock so semi synthetic or fully sythetic oil is simply not needed.
