    hey,

having trouble with this whole metagame concept. been googling but nothing seems to explain in non nonsense what it actually is.

can you experienced players fill me in on what exactly it is, and how important it is, because im drawing blank.

    thanks.

MrPlough, at the moment in the STTs that I play, people who 3bet push pre-flop usually have AK/AQ and people who 3bet raise pre-flop usually have KK-AA.
Therefore at the moment with AA/KK I'm 3bet pushing, getting a lot of calls from people with medium pairs who think they have the odds for a race.

However the idea of metagame (I think) is that at some stage this will stop being the best strategy as more and more people a) realise what I'm doing b) copy it. Pushing with AA will be getting done by everyone, in which case raising will instead be the profitable way to play.

Another example of metagame, if everyone in the world started playing the bubble of an STT exactly the way its recommended by tools like SNGWhizz (say pushing with ATC, and calling with top 40% of hands), then for a while it would be quite profitable to be very meek on the bubble and fold into the money. But then others would realise this was a profitable strategy and it would go full circle again !!

Metagame just refers to your overall strategy rather than your strategy in isolation for one hand. So sometimes the best move for one hand is actually quite bad for metagame reasons. A good example is value betting. When you get to the river with a very strong hand, many players instinct is to bet small. This is retarded for a number of reasons, but one of the biggest is a metagame reason. If you are betting very small with strong hands your opponents will realise this, and be suspicous when you bet big, correctly assuming you just want them to fold and dont actually have anything. You cant bet small with bluffs and value bets because people will just call out of interest.

My (pretty basic) undersatanding of it goes along the lines of....

9 left in an MTT....I limp with AA/KK....this is bad for my Metagame as people who notice this will not respect my raises as much as AA/KK is no longer part of my raising range.....and this is a time where it is most profitable to get your raises through....

there is probably a lot more to it but fcuked if I know...

    my 2c

edit: yeah - what HJ said...

this is my understanding of the term too, except I wouldn't use the term retarded.

Metagame becomes more important when playing with the same players over a long period, but should still be taken into account even in turbo stt's.

Metagame is best described with an illustration of it in action:
