Moral Dillema

I decided posting here would be the best choice, as its not a personal issue as such.

I'm after receiving a cheque in the post for the amount of €35 from a company called Maxicorp Productions. I don't fully know why I've gotten this cheque, but I believe it might have something to do with a bit of extras work I did as part of my college work. It was on something called "Paddywhackery".

This is the only thing I can think of, however, as nothing else springs to mind.

    Now, heres the moral dillema;

2 groups went to this to be extra- G.M.I.T Cluain Mhuire and my PLC group. As far as I know, only the GMIT crowd were supposed to get paid, and not us. Once again, I don't know if this is what maxicorp productions is, but a google search has more or less turned up nothing.

What would you do in my position? Would you keep the cheque or let them know they may have made a mistake?

Also, if anyone knows what maxicorp productions is, it would be a great help.

Keep it of course, its 35 quid for nothing. Just deny any knowledge of receiving it if you get any letters back. 35 quid can be better put to use by yourself than wasting it on a charity.

    It's only thirty-five quid ffs.

Cash it, if they come after you for it at a later stage, it's hardly going to break you to pay it back is it?

Think of it as a loan with no set date to pay it back.:)

€35 isn't a moral dilemma for me, if you wanted to you could keep the cheque for a week and if there is no word from the company cash it.

Cash it and keep the dosh anyday.

Good idea, can a mod add a poll on to this- would you keep the cheque; yes or no.. something like that.

Dont forget tha Atari Jaguar option...

You see that's not very clear cut.

If I received a cheque, unexpectedly, for ONE MILLION DOLLARS, I'd be a bit suspicious and probably investigate.

Thirty-five euro though. Hardly worth losing sleep over.

Tell me this, would the poll results make a decision easier for you? Because nearly every reply to this thread is telling you to keep the feckin' money.

Hi boneyarsebogman, I'm the CEO of Maxicorp Productions. If that cheque isn't sent back within the hour, I'll send the boys around tonight and your body will be found in 10 different counties. You have been warned.

Nope, but it would be interesting somewhat.

I know its not a lot of money, but I'm a firm believer in doing the right thing.. but the money would come in quite handy now

I would be interested in finding out what maxicorp productions is though, as I went to IMDB and the people behind Paddywhackery were called Dough Productions.

does raise the question tho, at what point would it be wrong to cash the cheque?

that would be the bit where the cops grab ya, as far as I'd be concerned

The crossover point into being wrong is at €35.47 apparently!

It's made out in your name, right? Then it's yours.

Obviously the company decided to pay everyone for the extra work. Enjoy your new found wealth my friend!

Harldy a moral dilemma really. Would be a different game of marbles altogether if the cheque were for €35million for example but €35 is fine.

I'm going for a few beers tonight so I'll gladly take off your hands.

    Take a bus to Cork.

    Just buy Cork.

(and with inspiration from another thread) OH OH YOU JUST GOT SERVED!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,367 ✭✭✭Agamemnon

Great idea, Nehpets! OP, just send me the money and Cork is yours. Feel free to come down here and lord it over your new property any time you like. Just remember - if people ignore or laugh at your claims, that's just our way of showing respect to the owner of the county.

RTS, unless your name is on it. If your name is on it, putting a call into them (provided there's a number attached) isn't going to kill you, is it? I'd prefer to know it was legitimately mine, if I'd received it. If there's no number attached and no return address, looks like you just got gifted €35.

It's €35. . . . . I don't think I'd even bother cashing it, TBH. Just put it in your drawer for things that are important, and forget about it.

    Yeeshk . . . .

In fairness, I would see another moral / ethical issue here: why should the GMIT crowd get paid, and the crowd from your course not be paid?

By the sounds of it, you did the work, just didn't expect to get paid for it. Now you have been.

Perhaps they just decided that it was unfair not to pay everyone the same?

I think it was the crowd somehow involved in the extras work we did. Another girl from the PLC group got a cheque as well, but not sure who else.

Some shops should cash cheques, shouldn't they? Or would I be better off going to a bank?

Completely and utterly off topic, but is there anyway of changing the mozilla spellchecker to UK instead of US 'cause I hate the way it refuses to acknowledge the fact that realised is spelt with an S not a Z!

and with the other 2 euro??

    16 x 2 = 32
    hamburger = 1
    = 33

i believe 17 is in order, or would be the order

Hey, I work next to Brook House in DL (our building is attached to it) and i've never heard of them. Want me to go and stake them out?!

Should I report it to the guards, or just leave it be.

I'll have a look-see on my way to Friday drinks later and see what's going on there. If I see a brothel or an illegal sweatshop full of small Asian children.... then yes, report it to the guards. If not, I think you'll be ok!

I found those sites before I posted this. Didn't answer much for me. Plus discovered that the production company behind Paddywhackery were called Dough Productions, and not Maxicorp.
