Well I'm sorry his marriage didn't work out but I'm glad he's making another album!

    http://www.marilynmanson.com/news.php

The Antichrist Superstar exorcises some demons - including his divorce - on new album BY AUSTIN SCAGGS

Marilyn Manson sits in the front room of his home in San Fernando Valley, drinking from a bottle of rose-tinted absinthe. The house feels dark and unwelcoming - his estranged wife, model Dita Von Teese, has recently moved out - and Manson apologizes for the disarray. Without the makeup that he usually wears in public, and dressed casually in black, Manson pours himself into a couch and explains the turmoil that's plagued him for much of the past year - and ultimately led him to restart his musical career with a new album, EAT ME, DRINK ME, due in June. The songs, he says, "are clearly written to seduce somebody," though he is hesitant to divulge whom. "I don't want people to think the record is some kind of exploitation of my personal life," says Manson. "At the same time, it also represents exactly who I am and what I feel."

For the next few hours, Manson plays unmastered cuts from EAT ME, DRINK ME and describes his year in hell. "Halfway through last year I was in such a black hole of depression," he says. "I couldn't make anything, I couldn't do anything. I lost hope." At the time, Manson's mother was diagnosed with a mental illness and, he says, "I got trapped in one of the classic rock & roll cliches of having people that work for me rob me behind my back." He had no interest in making music, and the film project he was focused on - Phantasmagoria: The Visions of Lewis Carroll based on the twisted life of Lewis Carroll - became a psychological burden.

Manson says he was finally uplifted by a close friend's morbid gesture of devotion. "She picked up a butcher's knife and said, 'Here, you can stab me,'" he says. "When someone was willing to drown with me, I really didn't want to drown anymore." This theme is depicted in the six-minute epic "If I Was Your Vampire," which Manson wrote on Christmas. "That song is the new 'Bela Lugosi's Dead,'" says Manson. "It's the all-time gothic anthem."

The album's lyrics were written after last Halloween. That night, Manson presided over the opening of his Los Angeles art gallery. The next morning he left his home in the Valley and set up temporary digs at a studio-equipped house in the Hollywood Hills. "Suddenly," he says, "I felt liberated. I'd write a song, walk two doors down the hall and record it right then." Manson's lyrics, which were recorded over tracks by Tim Skold (who joined Manson's band in 2002 as bassist), came quickly. "I was writing out of desperation and hope," he says. "The record came out in a rush - like an open wound - and I went with it."

"Just A Car Crash Away" is a Bic-waving ballad, a death march punctuated by Skold's searing guitar solo. "The Red Carpet Grave" is classic Manson, echoing with buzz saws and primitive percussion. (In fact, on "You, Me and the Devil Makes 3" they beat on a metal skunk trap they found outside the house.) Manson wrote the album's first single, "Putting Holes in Happiness," on his birthday, and describes it as "a romantic-misogynistic-cannibal-gothic-vampire ballad."

Manson hopes to release a film in conjunction with the disc that he claims "is nothing short of the most horrifying horror that you could ever experience." He will also tour this summer, debuting live versions of the new songs at European festivals. "I really wanted to be a singer on this album," he says. "This is very earnest and uncalculated and raw, in the sense that I know I'm ****ed up, and I'm really not ashamed of it."

heard a clip on some french website about 10mins ago. only 30 seconds, but it sounds a lot like older material, as opposed to "tgaog", which i didn't entirely fall in love with.

He's going out with that chick from that 13 movie now, she's 19! I always found Manson boring.. I read his book and I thought it was going to be twisted but it was a snore-fest. All his musics pretty boring too

The Long Hard Road out of Hell, it's an autobiography he co-wrote with some other guy. Some of it is interesting but all to be taken with a large pinch of salt.

His new song is awful, far too repatative. That same riff over and over.

I'm a big Manson fan and was really looking forward to seeing them that day but I too felt that their performance was lacking. It was like they didn't want to be there or something.

Yep thats the exact same feeling I got. IT was the last show of the tour, they should have been celecrating , giving it socks, instead they just rushed through everything as fast as possible.

More like the last day of school...

Anyway, got the album yesterday. It's good, I like it. It's another typical Manson affair. But with a hint of emo....

I cannot understand why people have these obscure views of famous people.

I mean a lot of people probably think he is an extremist in some sense of the word, with all the makeup and blah blah blah. He appears to be as normal as anyone else. The makeup? Well he is an ugly bastid underneath so why not. Dita Von Teese was mint though o.0

    Fame, who needs it...

Maybe he has finally decided to come out of his closet about his emo-ish tendecies.

    I was shocked!
A big emo looking love heart on the disc, and songs with titles like 'Red Carpet Grave' and 'Mutilation is the Most Sincere Form of Flatery'.

    Does this mean I'm emo?

Anyway, after giving the album a proper digest I have to admit it has barely grown on me.
It is a really strange album and untill you hear Manson singing, you would have difficulty knowing it was a Manson album. I checked the credits and the entire album was written by Manson and Skold. Absoloutly no input from the other 'members'. I'm not sure that I appreciate that. The musicians of the band always wrote good music and when Skold was a contributor of equal parts, I also enjoyed. But now that he is the sole writer, alot of stuff that I'm not sure I like is surfacing. Whatsmore, some of the guitar riffs sound like something you would expect to hear from a British indie band like the Arctic Monkeys or something.
How and ever, I'll keep listening and see if it grows on me further.

Ive only listened to 3 or 4 tracks so far and I am pleasantly suprised by the album. I think it is actually quite good, although saying that I sis have extreamely low expectations of the album.

I really do dispise heart shaped glasses though .

What kind of reviews is this album getting in the press good/bad?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,673 ✭✭✭✭senordingdong

All good, but sure they're never anything to go by.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,969 ✭✭✭christophicus

Yeah I know I just wanted to know how my taste was compared to all of the reviewers

I was pleasently surprised by EMDM. What with Linkin Park and all these other formerly awesome bands selling out I was afraid he'd do the same. But I actually really like every single song except Heart-Shaped Glasses. I mean really, wtf? It's all....happy or emo or something....Disgusting whatever it is. But songs like Evidence and Eat Me, Drink Me totally make up for it!

As far as i know "mutilation is the most sincere form of flattery" is making fun of the whole emo scene

I am impressed with this, though I wasn't expecting much from the reviews. Its very 80's sounding and I can hear Alice Cooper all over it. Then again I liked his last album where most people didn't.

Yeah it's not without it's charm but Holy Wood remains my favourite.
