It might be a broken thermostat, it's placed in the back of the pipe on the top right hand side of the engine when your sitting on the bike.

The hornets can get hot but this doesn't sound right. get it checked out to be safe.

Not normal to be at top of scale of temp gauge. What sort of riding causes this? Does it happen all the time? When engine cools down, check level of coolant in system (unscrew filler cap probably under petrol tank, not the reservoir!). Should be filled to brim - be careful to let it cool down well, and turn a little in beginning to let pressure escape. Btw if you have to refill, you are best mixing distilled rather than tap water with coolant/rust inhibitor mixture, distilled less prone to rusting.

Wouldn't ride till you get this rectified - risking seizure. Does the bike become sluggish after a while riding with this temp?

Also, the temp gauge is measuring temp of coolant in radiator, not your engine oil. If you're asking about feeling heat coming from engine, well yeah you will feel the heat.

Gauge ain't measuring oil temp (unless you have two temp gauges - not sure about hornet but 99% sure it'll be measuring coolant temp rather than that of the oil cooler radiator)
