Protein Question

Can you take a protein shake instead of a meal?
I was reading elsewhere around here that you should have around 6 meals a day, most with protein, but somedays I'll be in work and not manage it.
I have a big tub of that ON stuff that I take now and again, I know the protein makes you feel fullish and slightly suppresses your appetite a bit, but should I be having 6 meals plus shakes or would it be ok to have maybe breakfast, lunch, shake, dinner, shake kinda?

YOu need a certain amount of carbs, proteins and healthy fats a day and overall number of calories.

What you need to do is find out how much these are ( read stickies ) and then break them out evenly over the 6 meals. This is normally the best best but i have times when i just have a high protein meal with fats and no carbs, and some meals that are higher in carbs than others.

You need to let us know what you general aims are and what you diet is like and we can help you a bit more.

An option that I usually use in work is 2 scoops of protein in water, an orange, and 7 walnut halves. Does me nicely and it's gone in about 2 minutes.

And do you count that as one of your recommended 6 meals?
Does protein keep your metabolism going in the same way as carbs etc. I plan on trying to aim for the correct ratios overall (and I'm going to use the stickies to figure out how many calories I should consume a day) but I'm just wondering can one meal be mostly protein and then another meal be mostly carbs if the overall result for the day is the recommended ratio and calories ?

Well, your body only needs so much of anything at one particular time, so too much protein will just be wasted, and two much carbs could end up being stored as fat.

As such, you better off having the split pretty much even, although it is a good idea to have more carbs before and after your workout, as this is when you need them the most.

Yeah of course I do!! Anytime I eat, it's a meal. They don't have to be big to get counted. In fact being too big is probably detrimental.

My ratio's roughly 35/30/35 fat/carb/protein and it's worked fantastically. Try and get most of your carbs early in the day, or immediately postworkout. Then switch more towards fat at the end of the day. But of course laods of protein all the time!

This is all fascinating. A guy in work is insanely into this stuff but I tend not to trust him since he thinks Lance Armstrong is a god that walks as a man! :)

Ah, thanks Dragan, wasn't too sure if it was like a daily qouta or if it was the fuel that keeps ya run run running. Wasted protein isn't bad though right? It just gets excreted, no harm no foul?

Oh don't worry Hanley, I'm not making the same mistake as a newbie elsewhere in this forum (my meals don't need three courses :p ), I'm just a tad unsure about this whole protein shake thing, I'm just new to taking them, so I wasn't sure if they'd count. But now I know. Goal. :)

Dude, Lance Armstrong IS a god. Seriously one of my biggest sporting heroes. If you haven't read Every Second Counts then you really need to.

And hahaha burn on the 3 courses. High5!

    *High5 on the sly*
You never know who's watching, she might be another g'em in the making
... and from my short time here I've learnt to never be mean to a girl incase she can secretly kick your ass.
I bumped into a girl I used to go to college with, hadn't seen her for about two years, turns out she got mad into kickboxing and had started winning all these medals. It really puts a nice edge on a slagging session because at the back of your mind there's a niggling "she could probably kick my ass and due to the no-hitsy-girlsies rule there's nothing I can do against it". It's like danger slagging! Oh, I think that could be a new sport. Goal.

Ah, I know Lance Armstrong is amazingly impressive, but the guy in work is obsessed. Which is hilarious because we just start saying stuff about LA being a drug user and the dude freaks. Heh heh, buttons are nice to push. :)
Apparently though he was proven to be the fitest person alive or something, can't remember exactly but I think it was about how efficiently his body burnt oxygen or something.

When has Lance had a positive drug test?

L'equipe RE-TESTED 5 year old samples of his Urnie in a desperate bid to come up with something. And they found "trace" EPO. Keep in mind this was in '99, and they still only "found" trace amounts. There's no way in hell he could have been using it in later years.

Bascially, the French have been on a witch-hunt ever since he started dominate professinoal cycling. They jsut can't handle the fact that he won it 7 times in a row.

It should also be noted that the paper who got hold of the "leaked information" about Mr Armstrongs tests are owned by the same umbrella group who operate and promote the Tour De France.

    Odd.

Depends what you call a meal in your mind. Would a plate of smash potato be a meal? it is processed from food mostly dehydrated carbohydrate. Your protein shake was similarly made by processing food, resulting in mostly dehydrated protein.

Some people equate protein to drugs, from listening to Gerry Ryan or other crap and cannot get into their heads that whey protein is simply a dairy product, just like dried skimmed milk.

I had a mate who is big into sports warning another guy against whey protein saying he should never take it and only get it from food like chicken etc. Then the other day I found out he was recommending the guy should take glucose gel packs for energy!, so processed sugars are fine, but processed protein is the devil.

Ah I know there's no real proof... which is why it's so fun to annoy the guy in work with it! :D
The dude has now stopped wearing his yellow Lance Armstrong band and has started wearing some sort of "drug free sport" one. heh heh.
