MicroKorg as midi controller?

hey everyone, I do believe this is my firstpost in here, so hello!

Anyway, I play a microkorg in a band and a little bit for computer music tooby just recording it as a line-in. I recently got started using Reason and know that using the microkorg as a midi controller would make things so much easier.

I'm on a Dell precision laptop with USB inputs (no midi or phono or anything), what would be an affordable interface that I could buy that would allow the MicroKorg to be used? If it were under 100euro that would be ideal, also is there anything in this range that would possibly be compatable with some sort of XLR/phono/jack inputs? I know that you're talking about much more expensive gear though, and the eventual plan is to get something like an Mbox so for now leads and/or an interface to make the Korg into a midi controller is the plan.

Ideally if these could be bought in or around the Dublin area that'd be great, as i'd rather not have to buy online.

    Thanks very much.

    Hi, welcome to the forum.

You could go with something very simple like this: http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/Uno-main.html

All it does is convert MIDI signals from your Microkorg into a format whereby a USB port can take them in. Pretty foolproof really.

But if you would find audio inputs handy as well, as you surely would, then it might be worth thinking about buying an audio interface which combines MIDI I/O with audio I/O. Won't go into too much detail here as this topic has been done to death on these boards ;)

Have a look here to get you started anyways and best of luck.

    http://www.thomann.de/ie/usb_audio_interfaces.html

(one of the cheaper ones would probably suffice for your needs)

Now, who wants to write a "Which interface will I buy???/How do I record guitar on my laptop???" post for the Tips and Pointers sticky? ;)

Thanks very much for the feedback, I think for now, due to financial restrictions, I will just get the 1in/1out midi interface. Hopefully waltons or music maker will have something that suits at an affordable price...
