Hi, a mate has asked if I can help her do a modelling portfolio - Im a bit nervous as I havent a clue WHERE to do it plus she may be half naked  Well I'd be ok with that its just the fear of royally cocking it up.

Now she knows I only take pictures of crap like this, this or this for the laugh but Im sort of the only semi decent non perverted person she knows who's into cameras

Any advice, hints, tips from past experience would be welcomed. Failing that any hints tips or info would be welcomed.not just BS you've heard off the net ! ;-)

Best thing to do is to get some fashion mag's and check out the poses in them for ideas. Get her to do the same - It's her portfolio after all.

Is there any studio you can rent out near you?

Otherwise, find a location - This is also where the magazines can come in handy!

I've found just basics, what should be in the portfolio. If she is really pretty, enjoy it :-)
If she wants to be proffesional, tell her to go to proffesional photographer. Her agent, agencies and carrier will appreciate it.

Why not do a fully clothed test shoot of general portraiture before getting into the naked/ glamorous side of it ?

Fully or partially un-clothed is not going to work unless you have covered the basics of portraiture - (specially if this is a studio shoot and you havent worked in a studio setting before).

Once your comfortable with that then work out in advance what the model will be wearing (different sets of clothes are a good idea to cover more ground in a single shoot) and some basic poses that you want to get.

The fact that you know the model in advance and are comfortable in each others company is a big advantage. Having said that if she has modelling experience before hand thats going to be a big help too. Good luck and let us know how you get on with it.

oh, i was thinking about this last week, for some reason stick a model infront of a neon sign, like one in a shop window (could say "eat in" or "groceries") and it instantly looks new york/soho hip to the beat...man.

you could do something like that?

    aoif :D

shes totally comfortable.. thats the thing its mostly 'where'

Why not do a fully clothed test shoot of general portraiture before getting into the naked/ glamorous side of it ?

it wont be naked just... 'personal' but I guess they all are.

I've done some nice picture of people but nothing glamourours really and as for practise.. well she is practise.

I know a bit about lighting and such and do look at silly things such as the way the light is cast on a model as well as depth of field and all while most people are eying other 'parts' of the picture !

Its also not so much that the pics I want to get, I think what she wants is just to muck about a little and we have a goo afterwards and hopefully there will be some decent pics. HOWEVER I want to get it right so that we both haven't wasted our time.

If you really are that worried about doing it right first time then have someone there that knows what they are doing!
There is no-way for sure that anyone here could explain step by step how to do everything right, especially if you havent done it before!
Ask around, youd be surprised who would be interested in helping you..

Fajitas was a great help in my last shoot in the studio,2 heads are better than one!
