[REQ]A Streaming Media Player

I'm currently looking for something that can play movies stored on a HDD on the TV. Either streaming over WiFi/LAN or on an integrated HDD. I'm currently using a "HDD Player" which is a crudely constructed Chinese creation that works, but only supports FAT32 disks up to 120gb.

I'm thinking of going down the Xbox route with XBMC and stream things over LAN but I've been looking at things like this.

Any suggestions would be appreciated :)

    Thanks,
    Adam

I have a Packard Bell Store & Play 50 GB unit that was priced to clear out of PC World last year. Works as both an external USB hard drive and also as input to a Tv (via SCART).

A colleague of mine has one of these. I don't know if it would have the same 'limitation' referred to in your post

This is a cheaper alternative to the one on Komplett. I think it will do the job you want, been thinking about getting one for a while to stream Swedish TV off the net for the missus.

That actually looks pretty ideal. I found some additional information on the manufacturers website: http://www.adstech.com/products/MXL-581/Pdf/MXL581br_Screen.pdf?pid=MXL-581

It's gas, I just noticed from the above link the manufacturer has a base is Shannon, but the cheapest place to buy it I can find is from the UK! Might be worth giving Shannon a call or a mail!

All these media suck, bar xbox media center ;)

    Reasons being:
    - They can't easily be updated
    - Have issues playing hi-res vids
    - Usually networking is something thats an afterthought.

Even the Apple TV is a pile of poo and is too damn expensive imho.

I found a better solution, pick yourself up an old pc (small form factor) and a USB remote, load on GeexBox and you will have a player that will do every codex out there and its easily up-dateable.

    http://www.geexbox.net/

Free and opensource of course !
    All supported remotes are here:
    http://lirc.sourceforge.net/remotes/

You can even stick in a Wi-fi card if you like and it supports USB mass storage (Yes USB1 will work perfectly with DivX) and SMB (CIFS) for Windows shares and the like.

Beyond that i'd recommend an Xbox running media center with 800GB of networked storage available over wireless ;)

I'm using xbmc and it's brilliant for streaming off the PC .. with a soft modded €30 ebay xbox hard to beat price wise also!

The only con is the XBOX is pretty loud even after replacing the fan.

Can the XBox be used wirelessly ?
I thought it only had an ethernet cable connection ?

Forgive my stupidity on this account, but is it possible to browse for the required stream on your PC and then send it to the XBOX? From the little I have seen it seems quite cumbersome to type in a long url on the XBOX.

No need, just set up a shared folder(s) on your pc and then simply navigate to them on the XBOX.
