Paranormal movies & TV Show

Just watching the 1963 version of The Haunting, based on Shirly Jackson's Haunting of Hillhouse (digitally restored, in surround sound on my new 42 inch flat screen I might add ;) ).

Anyways, I personally regard this as the greatest ghost movie ever made. Simple sound and lighting and clever camera work beats ever special effect I've ever seen.

So I'm wondering what movies and films the folks here really like.

I quite like Supernatural (The TV show) - kinda X-files-ish and VERY mythology based.

    anyone got anything else?

The Ghost Whisperer is quite good, watched it when I was back in Ireland last... then you also have Charmed, which is a pretty good show, even if it doesn't specifically deal with ghosts, etc.

I vaguely recall a series called Millennium, what might have been related to the supernatural in some way... never did get to see it, mind.

There is a tv programme called urban legends, where they take urban legend stories and see if they are real or not, kinda cheaply done but some of them are good.

Always thought "The Exorcist" was a pretty scary film. There was a documentry on it a while back on the original story behind it which was brilliant, it had interviews etc with a priest who apparantly was there with the young boy who all this happened to. They never showed the young boy or gave an details on who he is which is understandable.

I agree on the ghost whisperer and supernatural - though the latter tends to scare the life out of me.

X files in itself did have a bit of a paranormal type thing going on for a while.

I remember Millenium. It was quite dark at the time but very good.
    Has nobody mentioned MEDIUM?

I LOVE that series more than any of the others.

Millennium (two n's people) was excellent for the first 1 or 2 seasons and then they messed it up. They tried to fix it but they'd already done the damage and the last season was just pathetic. Not sure how much supernatural/paranormal was in it - apart from Frank Black being psychic. Alot of otherworldly Evil but mostly fictional rather than based on anything.

Millennium was a spin off of the X-files, so the two shows had alot of the same atmosphere (and a cross over occured at least once) - I think x-files did a few good paranormal based episodes, mothman for instance. The scariest one was about the inbred family - that freaked me out -when it aired, my partner at the time and I had my parents house to myself, we barely slept that night - and not for the right reasons!

Hate Ghostwhisperer though, mainly because Jennifer Love Hewitt is so annoying. How any guy could like her is beyond me.

Supernatural do indeed do their research. Which is what I like about it. It is an interesting show - they don't just focus on conventional supernatural themes - they sometimes offer supernatural takes (if far fetched) on historical occurances, the last episode to air in the US, Croatoan for instance.

Really though, check out the 1963 version of the Haunting.

I watched The Exorcism of Emily Rose recently, it's frightening and haunting at the same time. I was even more disturbed when I found out it's based on a true story: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Exorcism_of_Emily_Rose

Exorcism of Emily Rose is good, bit of a courtroom drama for me but An American Haunting is far superior!

Storm of the Century was a good film. I think this film was based on the lost Colony on Roanoke Island.

My all time favourite supernatural movie (and quite probably my all time favourite movie), would be Donnie Darko. The plot, which I won't reveal here because it would both spoil the movie and take all night (if not all weekend), is excellent. It's very unique, engrossing and thought provoking. It leaves a lot unanswered at the end, but in a very good way. It's filmed superbly and has an incredible style that compliments the story perfectly. And it has probably the best soundtrack I've ever heard and the sound throughout is great (sounds great on a good surround system, especially if you can shift the balance a bit to the rear ;) ). I was never a big fan of the x-files, but I think this would be right up any fans street, definitely worth a watch.

Who remembers Ghostwatch? It was a live event from a supposedly haunted house and it was screened in the early 90's. It caused a huge amount of controversy but I always thought it was great fun. I have the DVD.

Watch closely at the bit where the camera pans across the bedroom after everyone has left.

is it a load of muck or actually good? If you say its worth a look I'll get it? whats the story with all those cat sounds, I really starting to hate cats, use to like them about three years ago, now i think they are just evil and my new dog frank hasn't even barked at one yet, I dont know what to do with him,

never get a dog to replace a dog, that's all I can say.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,216 ✭✭✭✭monkeyfudge

Well as the story unfolds over the evening it turns out that the murderer (who was actually possessed by the ghost of another murderer) killed himself under the stairs in the house wasn't found for days and he kept a lot of cats who started to eat him.

Nice bit of Action & Adreneline here:
    NEXT
Las Vegas showroom magician Cris Johnson has a secret which is a gift and a curse which torments him: he can see a few minutes into the future. Sick of the examinations he underwent as a child and the interest of the government and medical establishment in his power, he lies low under an assumed name in Vegas, performing cheap tricks and living off small-time gambling “winnings.” But when a terrorist group threatens to detonate a nuclear device in Los Angeles, government agent Callie Ferris must use all her wiles to capture Cris and convince him to help her stop the cataclysm.

I watched 'The Covenant' last night, i think it's meant to be kind of 'the craft' meets 'the matrix'. It was kind of fun. Not great but not terrible either.

One is was just thinking of recently that I quite liked was Gothika, I thought that had a good creepy feel to it, the ending was a little weak, but I enjoyed it anyway.

Oh, does Toy Story 2 count ? All those toys coming to life, creepy ...

    ;)

    ~
    ll
anywho I thought that was good when i saw it.......bit weird and perhaps based more on spiritual/mathematical properties of life than ghosts but worth a watch.
I did see it during my short 'rebel' phase of being a teenager and that may have influenced me. LOL

EDIT : That's weird.....i posted this message first......but then it disappeared and then both disappeared and then both reappeared in reverse order......speculations anyone LOL
