New Computer

    Hi,

My Pentium 2 is now really showing its age and I'm looking to get a new computer. Current computer I bought in the UK - made by Mesh - has lasted very well as I bought it in 1997.

Only really use for Word, Excel, Photos, CAD and Internet. Tried buying a Mesh computer from the UK which was highly recommended in magazines but had problems getting it in from the UK. Am looking to spend ~ €1200 and needs to be a desktop running Vista.

Any recommendations? Live in the Cork area but would buy from UK or online.

    Thanks

Would you consider Building your next pc?
If not Dell is a good choice as it cuts out "the middle man":)

Dont buy from PC World or any high street vendor, you will be ripped off bigtime in comparison to what you can get for your money from other companies.

    Agreed.

As CAD would be the only intensive application you could get a dell and get as much ram as possible with it. Alternatively you could build your own pc at komplett.

I have to agree - build your own with 1200 you'll have a great machine.

One other thing stay away from Vista unless you absolutely need to have it.

True, the current build is more trouble than its worth with regards to drivers and stability problems.
Komplett is great I must add, I bought alot of Hardware from them and they always have good deals/decent prices.
As said above, you can configure and "build" a PC in much the same way as ordering from Dell.
Good choice If you arent inclined on building.

have you considered changing your Pc more often and spending less ?

Seems to me like your buying cutting edge to 'last' as long as you can, which has left you using a pentium II in 2007.

Any 600/700 euro PC with XP should do you for three/four years and then trade up to vista, when the hardware has moved on again.

No disrepect intended btw .. just a different point of view

Same point of view ... current PC cost just over 500 (no monitor) .. only bought before christmas ... and its a beast for what I want it for :)

Have a look on Adverts. You should pick up a decent socket 939 system for around 6-700yoyo that would be more than capable of what you want it to do.
