A problem with references

Have a bit of a problem with references, am wondering if there is anyone with experience with it and ideas as to what to do about it.

With one employer for most of my working life, ideally I should be able to get a reference from them, that is, had they not gone into liquidation.

So as the company does not exist anymore, how does one deal with the lack of a reference in this situation.

Do you have any contact details of any of your ex-managers?
Perhaps you could contact them directly??
The reference could come from them directly?

References are a charade. Omit them.

Explain to interviewer the situation- you can hardly be blamed that compnay no longer in existance. If you can get ex mananger to agree to be phoned. IMO mostly people use references to guage things like punctuality, attendance general ability to get along with others etc - your qualifications, experience tell their own story and can be questioned during interview.
If this doesn't work have you anyone that can give you a character reference (are you member of committee, sprts club etc?)

As above, and if they ask for proof, your last pay slip should state how long you were in the company.

Omit them from your CV certainly, but it's not your decision for your potential employer to not ask for them.

It doesn't matter if the company is there or not, once there is someone that you used to report to who can give you a reference.

For future reference; if possible, it's always a good idea to have a referee who doesn't work for your current company. A lot of companies have a policy of not giving a reference at all. Also, it's hard to get a job offer without providing at least one reference first. It's good to be able to provide that reference without having to tell anyone in your company.
