Can i install application on External HD

I have a Macbook Pro and the hard disk is getting quite full with video archives from editing i've been doing.

So i was looking to get an external HD to put this stuff on and I was wondering...could i install Final Cut on this HD and run it from there? I only use it for stuff when i'm based at home so don't need it installed on my internal drive.

Also is there a major difference between USB 2 and Firewire? I know USB quotes speeds of 480mbps, but a friend told me that in truth it doesn't work out that way as the data transfers in bursts, which is why its not great for video streaming. Would that make much difference when running an app? I would have thought the disk access rate would be the limiting factor here!

I've always found Firewire to be more reliable.

The Macbook Pro has Firewire 800 on it, doesn't it? You can pick up a 500GB Firewire 800 hard drive for about €200.

hmmm... It's not something I've ever seen in a shop.

Komplett.ie is where I got my one and it works very nicely.

As for your other question I believe Final Cut Pro likes to have the scratch disk set up as a different disk to the one that the application is installed on.

Ideally you should probably be capturing your footage to an external HD.

Final Cut Pro on it's own doesn't take up a huge amount of space either... it's things like motion and DVD Studio Pro that come along with it that take up huge amounts of space. Try a custom install and see what bits you need and don't need.

Any decent computer shop should stock a range of external hard drives. Was in the laptop store in Stephen's Green earlier this week and saw some. Like someone else said, I got my MyBook from Komplett.

I just bought a My Book Pro because of the Firewire 800. It hasn't arrived yet. But I'll let you know how it goes.

Standard firewire is faster than USB 2 despite what the marketing bumph might say. Getting Firewire 800 IMO seems a waste as no hard-drive mechanism yet reaches 400 Mpbs let alon 800 !!

    /edit: Linky

USB is a half-duplex technology - 2 wires both send and recieve but not simultaniously (sp?). While Firewire is a full duplex 4 wires - 2 x RX and 2 x TX so it does both at the same time.
