I think we need to see if search could be brought back with a move to vB 3.6 (which can allow better restrictions on searching anyway).

Have fun upgrading to 3.6 :) no easy task considering the amount of customisation here

    Hi,

Can I ask a tech question?

I remember reading a while back that you moved from 365 to digiweb and being non tech inclined to a degree I was wondering what was "that" benifit? Obviously there was one but servers/connections etc how did it help? What is it that digiweb have/provide?

Sorry for being nosey! it is not like 365 hostings was some blokes garage with a decentconnection if you get me.

/runs off probably to web hosting forum for answer....

I'm in no position to answer for anyone on this, but going by the speed of Boards since, it seems they went to a garage with a bigger pipe.

Theres an add at the top that appears every now and again, it's a link to the digiweb site with a basic description by Vexorg (one of the admins) as to why they switched.

AFAIR it came down to - boards.ie is big - it was getting a bit slow - a good deal was set up with digiweb - now it's faster - we don't regret it.

So when did we switch over?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,161 ✭✭✭steve-hosting36

To be fair, we probably have as much if not more capacity than digiweb. The move was entirely down to a few admins working at digiweb, not technical reasons whatsoever (as confirmed by the admin's posts).

Things feel faster now as more servers have been added to the cluster. 365 was not responsible for boards hardware (only colocation (power and connectivity)

After nearly 5 years of rock solid service, I would take exception to any implication that 365 were in any way inferior - we are, after all, a specialist hosting company and boards decision to move was not based on performance or technical reasons.

Hope that helps clear that up.

In fairness to Steve and all at 365 the speed issues were always hardware related and we've been told that I don't know how many times by the admins through various posts made on this very board.

The hosting division at Digiweb is run by a man who happens to have the online alter-ego of Regi. Draw from that what you will...

The above is true and accurate. There was new hardware added to the server cluster that increased performance.

Would they not of just added the new hardware beforehand ? or at any time during the previous year or so when performance was slipping.

I don't know, maybe the Digiweb data-centre has more jellowatts or whatever servers run on.

Either way, It's been lovely and fast for me since the move-over.

    Well played guys :)

You have to buy it before you can add it, and you have to have the money before you can buy it. It's no a simple "performance is slipping, bang in another stick of ram". Performance went up when the new server came online, none of the admins mentioned digiWeb at the time from what I remember. Also I don't think the admins have ever claimed that performance problems where due to a lack a bandwidth. Search is off because it's heavy on CPU resources.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,987 ✭✭✭✭zAbbo

I didn't mentioned bandwidth, but since you did, maybe Digiweb would be at an advantage as they are an ISP ?

New Hardware would require additional capacity, and everything that goes with it, power, cooling etc.

    The quote on digiwebs website
The solution was a newly built cluster of load-balanced webservers connected to a private database network. This provides boards.ie with a scalable model to grow capacity as traffic grows and the peace of mind that goes with it.
    Sounds decent

True you didn't mention bandwidth, you mentioned "jellowatts or whatever servers run on.". Being and ISP or not shouldn't come into it. This is a hosting service.

Thats a pretty good reason to switch if Hostings 365 wasn't able to provide this type of hardware support.

But an ISP would have the inside track on bandwidth, and could utilise idle capacity.

What makes you think theres an inside track. ISP's use bandwidth Hosting services use bandwidth. Digiweb buys it's capacity on international networks and irish networks in the same fashion Hosting365 does. By your logic Eircom should be the best hostings provider in ireland. Simply not the case (do they even have a commerical hostings service?)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,987 ✭✭✭✭zAbbo

They could prolly utilise it better, As for Eircom, well thats another story :)

Back on track, an upgrade to 3.6 and the return of the search feature would be great, some of the 3.6 features would make moderation so much easier. Infractions ftw

Cheers Steve. You answered my question. Not being tech inclinded I would have thought most of you guys were fairly even.

Basically it just so happens the move/new tech/improvement happened at the same time.

Just for the record, boards ran on a loadbalanced cluster solution in 365 too - we even provided the switches and load balancer at no cost (as well as the space, power and connectivity).

The decision to move was based solely on regi-proximity - nothing to do with bandwidth, power, capabilities or otherwise.

As Ireland's largest hosting provider, we probably have more transit, skilled engineers and experience in high-traffic websites than anyone else ;)

Why is anyone bringing bandwidth up here?

This never had anything to do with bandwidth. Ever.

Being an ISP has very little to do with available bandwidth - most consumer and business subscribers are on a shared, relatively low-speed connection to the ISP which then connects them to the web (usually via the ISP's INEX conneciton).

Assuming that H365 and Digiweb have comparable connections to the INEX, it would be more fair to say that 365 are better placed because they don't have thousands of subcribers leeching their bandwidth. ;)

  • Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 28,830 Mod ✭✭✭✭oscarBravo

A wee moment of pedantry, seamus: ISPs don't connect to the web via the INEX; they connect to each other via the INEX. It's strictly verboten to use an INEX peering for general intarweb transit.

For example, we have Internet connectivity from two separate suppliers, both of whom provide routing to the 'net for us. At the same time, we have peering arrangements with several other ISPs, HEANET, Blueface and others at the INEX. If one of our customers connects to (say) ebay.com, the traffic goes through the transit providers. If the same customer makes a Blueface VoIP call, the traffic goes via the INEX.

So hosting365 had boards running on the exact same technology as Digiweb has, and the only reason why they moved was so Regi could get access to the servers easier?

I feel since moving over to Digiweb things were faster.. or is that my imgination

No, what happened was that the hardware was upgraded at the same time as the move to Digiweb.

The hardware was what was limiting the speed, but since the hardware is completely owned by boards.ie ltd, the problem with speed was nothing to do with the hosting company.

The part that hosting365 was responsible for was completely solid.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68,317 ✭✭✭✭seamus

    Arrrrgggghhhh! Thanks Blowfish.
So hosting365 had boards running on the exact same technology as Digiweb has
I can't explain why, but pointing the finger at an innocent party makes my blood boil, so so much. I'm not angry at you Sully, just at the implication that it was 365's fault.
Like any good admin, the person(s) in charge of boards.ie's move, decided that adding/upgrading the hardware infrastructure of the system at the same time, would minimise the downtime and maximise said person(s) access to the hardware (remember that this is done during the admins personal time). Thus, any improvement seen is due to professional configuration of the hardware, not basic movement of it as is impliied.

Please point any subsequent criticism of the hosting company at this point.

    ITYM spammer.

    I'm no expert [/disclaimer]

*But* due to the coincidental nature of the move to Digiweb (for whatever reason) and the server(s) upgrade, the boardsie experience has improved beyond recognition.

Even a pleb like me can point to the hardware upgrades as the cause of this, especially given the manifold excuses and explanations for boardsies lamentable performance up to that point.

The admins have been notably transparent in their hardware difficulties, and in their support and goodwill for Hosting 365.

Given this, I'm bemused by the continual attribution of boardsies newfound speed to a change in host.

To confirm: We were very hardware-limited when we had the 3 server cluster. H365 gave us great connectivity but our servers couldnt utilise all of it because they were the bottleneck. When we moved to Digiweb (primaraily for Dan to have direct access) we also took the opportunity to upgrade to a considerably more powerful server cluster at the same time. Consequently loads from from the 20-60 range (which if you know anything about unix is simply ) to the far more acceptible 1-2 range.

Its unfair on H365 to compare the performance before and after the move with Digiweb because you are comparing apples and Ferrari's in terms of hardware.

    DeV.

In case anyone is wondering what he means there, Ferrari don't make servers, but apple do.
