    Hi all.

Just got the Tokyo Marui 1911A1 from Fire-Support. It's a beautiful pistol with a nice weight to it. It's thinner than my Western Arms M9A1 and not quite as heavy as it but the build quality is excellent. I've fired about 2 mags and it has a nice kick to it. I wont get a chance to fire it as much as I'd like as I'm almost out of gas. The hammer has a nice sound to it when its cocked manually, nicer than the M9.

Up until now, my favourite pistol was the Beretta M9/92F. Now that I have a 1911 I think I've changed my mind. I'm definetly want to get another 1911, probably a Western Arms model.

Here is a few pics of the 1911 by itself and beside my M9A1 and a small movie I made using the iSight camera in my Macbook. I've never used it before so I'm sorry if it's crap.

methinks the 1911 is a nicer unit to handle than the '92 in any mans language - just pure awesomeness!

if i could get a CO2 one i'd snap it up - the sigma has ruined me...

am i the only one here who isnt a fan of the 1911?

i just dont see the appeal, looks awfully plain or something. although in saying that, i've never held one, so i may be converted yet

Its great but doesn't suit mp5s an m4s ect, get a thompson then its ok to use but with modern guns it looks retarded!

As a matter of interest, why did you go for the Marui over the KSC and WE versions? Is it all ABS?

tbh - that's *exactly* why i like the look of it!

it just cuts straight to the point - no frills or decorations just this mean as hell "just built to do the job - but built to do it devastatingly well" look about it.

probably just the engineer coming out in me... :P

the 552 has the same brutal, "just built to ruin your day" look.

    i like that...

In the US some SWAT teams still use the 1911and don't want to change to another pistol. The FBI HRT teams still use it as do some units in the USMC in Iraq as they prefere having a .45 to a 9mm. Those guys in Iraq actually bought 1911s out of their own money custom built, thats how much they like it over the M9 which is standard issue!

So it does in fact go along with MP5s and M4s nicely.:)

I've read alot of bad things about the WE version. I dont know if the newer versions have improved but if they have I'll like to get one. I didnt know KSC made a 1911. The TM is mostly ABS. It has a metal trigger, hammer, safeties, sights and probably some metal parts inside the pistol.

Yeah, same here. Not that I've had a chance to hold the 1911, I think it's a great looking pistol.

i love the safety on the grip, so you have to hold it for it to shoot

I really like that feature, the XD pistols have that aswell.

I wonder how long it will take for a GBB XD to hit the market.

    XD? not familiar i'm afraid...

    If you're getting a 1911, at least get a decent one... :D

Although it is twice the price...

    And gold...yuck!

Yeah, the 1911 is a classic and still widely used by armed forces.
    .45 leaves bigger holes... :D
I recently started using it with green gas. Its the dogs bollocks.
Cant wait to get a threaded barrel, silencer and maybe metal frame and slide.
Silencer doesnt do much on a GBB but it just looks cool.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,391 ✭✭✭extremetaz

wow - that XD thing looks frighteningly like a glock 33...

    @KutjeBef: why the threaded barrel?...

And pre-dates both by a long time, glocks are by far the fugliest pistol ever.

hmm, that site says the XD2000 came out early 1990s, glock 17 and sig sauers p226 out mid 1980s

dont think glocks are ugly, just so boring! like a gun you'd make when you're a kid out of a floorboard with a hacksaw

Sorry I meant the 1911 not the XD2000

    @KutjeBef: why the threaded barrel?...

The thread is on the outside of the outerbarrel for a silencer,
a bit along the lines of the Mk 23 socom.
Maybe an inner barrel with a twist as well, altough its pretty accurate as it is.

And of course a Hogue grip!

Edit: Silencer doesn't really work on a gbb though.

aaah - when you said threaded i though you meant rifled... <smacks forehead>

yeah, i have a silencer on my 40F, covers the extended barrel. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 828 ✭✭✭whupass

you know if you get a barrel with a twist it means the hop up is useless

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 234 ✭✭KutjeBef

Well, they say the two combine to give a spin and a twist to make it more accurate. Thats what they claim anyway at WGC. Havent tried myself.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,391 ✭✭✭extremetaz

not possible to combine the two and maintain any sort of regular trajectory - to be honest, i can't really see the benefit of the twist, you're better off with the hop-up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,659 ✭✭✭CrazyRabbit

Well rifling and hopup both increase the range, but in different ways. I'm not sure how much use rifling would be for round bb pellets weighing only .2g though.

Also, I imagine that the backspin from the hopup would be partially negated by the horizontal spinning caused by the rifling. And these forces could even interfere with each other causing the bb to skew to the left or right.

I'll see if I can dig up and solid answer...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 234 ✭✭KutjeBef

Ah, cheers, guys. Sounded like a good idea..:(

Now what to spend my cash on now... ?

Semi-official information from a physics nerd (and nice guy) about rifling & hopup spin combined:

"Rifling a barrel wouldn't help a spherical bullet travel further because the purpose of rifling is to keep an arrow or cylindrical shaped projectile pointing in the direction of motion, which improves aerodynamics and accuracy. For a spherical projectile it's orientation won't matter."

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,391 ✭✭✭extremetaz

in addition to rabbits bit - the point of the hop-up is to cause the bb to "backspin".

this causes an area of high pressure to build up below the the bb as it spins, hence, ala theory of lift, (the air above the bb is traveling with the spin so is unaffected, the air below is traveling against the spin and hence, slows down --> pressure builds up) allows the bb to maintain it's course without loosing height for longer.

the twist, or "rifling" in barreled device terms seeks to prevent the projectile from tumbling, meaning the projectile will follow a more consistent path - which is probably why it isn't really considered all that useful with the bb as it doesn't matter if they tumble. (really just reiterating what rabbit said there but anyways...)

as for a system which will combine the two - don't think it's actually possible on account of the fact that it would lead to two separate gyroscopic forces acting on the same body meaning they'll either cancel each other out, or just find a common vector (probably some sort of axis pitched about 45degrees from the vertical and from the path of flight - assuming the same amount of energy in both the hop-up and twist spins)

i reckon if they could co-exist then the flight path would probably just spiral...

of course, i'm no expert on projectile physics, so that bit might only make sense in my head.... :p

Their is a barrel out which sort of combines the two but getting accurate information about it is just to painful. Its called the Tanio Koba hop twist barrel ,its not actually rifled it has small grooves on the inside so the bb doesnt actually touch em but the air around the bb gives it the same effect. Some people seem to swear by them others think their worthless apparantly if your gun fires consistantly at 1 joule then their great [apparantly], was going get one myself but i decided not to chance it.
of course, i'm no expert on projectile physics, so that bit might only make sense in my head....
im going copy this line to save me typing it out meself cos it applies to my post to :p
