Sigma 30mm f1.4

I like to take night shots with only street-lighting, but lugging a tripod around takes most of the fun out of it, so I want to get a fast wide-angle lens (on a student's budget). The one I have been thinking about is the Sigma 30mm f1.4 EX DC HSM Lens (Eur395.00 in Conns Cameras). I'd possibly like one slightly wider, but that would be a lot more expensive.

Does anyone have any experience with this lens?

He's* out drinking now as I just left him in the pub, but when he gets back you'll hear all about it.

Yes. I bought it a few months back because after using Fajitas one, I loved it. Great lens, wonderful contrast. Lovely and sharp. Very compact. Fast. Buy it!

Get it here and save yourself almost 100 euro.

    Hey Roen :D

Yep, deadly lens, still one of my faves, even though I'm full frame now.

AF is very fast, it's hella sharp, well built...and...fast.

    But... I would say, I would look at a Canon 28mm 1.8 or 50mm 1.4

If you ever upgrade to full frame, it's a bitch not having your lenses...

Yeah suppose 50mm f1.4 would be a better one.

Only problem is the OP wants a wider angle. Assuming the OP dosn't have a full frame camera, the 50mm would work out being around an 85mm.

Sigma 18-50 f2.8 EX wide and fast. Not as much as a 1.8 or 1.4 but not too heavy.

Thanks for the advice. I'm actually using a Nikon (D50), but they have similar offerings to the Canon lenses you mentioned (although they cost a lot more than I am willing to pay). I'm pretty certain I'll get that Sigma one unless someone brings out a slightly wider one for a similar price before I buy.

Go for it so! It's a great lens.

    Good luck!

Not to burst the bubble but wouldn't you still need a tripod? 1.4 is wide but I doubt you'd get short enough shutter speeds.

Then you need to start getting crafty with high ISO and pushing it, whether you use film or shoot in raw... and learn to hold your camera like a sniper ;)

Up to 800 or 1600 ISO, and you'll be getting speeds of 1/125 to 1/250.

Underexpose by a stop at least too...
