Audio gone on PC - Help!

Turned on my laptop this morning (Sony Vaio FE31M running xp) and when I opened up iTunes it said a problem had been detected with my audio configuration. Sure enough I couldn't play any tunes and when I went to the device manager it seems I no longer have any audio device ... wtf!! I did get an error message when attempting something that there was a problem with reading something in relation to the shell32.dll driver. When I hit the volume buttons on the pc they show the volume on screen as zero and the buttons do not effect this. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. DOn't want to be dragging this back to the shop if there's a simple answer. Why the hell do computers do these things?? The only thing I can see is that there were updates to be downloaded before I turned it off last night (when all was well). Not sure if these had some pesky impact!!
