    Used AKG 414s recently as overheads for drums very good sound i like em

    414s are great. real all round mics, great for vox, overheads and instruments

    Hey Fro,

    Have a 414 in my studio mainly for vocals. There's a few different types so you need to keep an eye on which one you're getting info about. Most frequently found at the moment are XL2 and B-ULS. The main differences are in the diaphragm and transformerless output. This is a classic mmic found in mmost studios, it is very versatile and is great on vocals, acoustics, overheads, peenanos, ambients and if your brave, vintage valve amps. Haven't come across the sm7 in any of the studios I've been in. I reckon its more designed for radio, the main thing to note is that it is a dynamic mic.
    I'll give you a bell if you want to try the 414. If you think the SM7 is what your after, you might want to check out the sennheiser MD421, too
