Would be interesting in joining a beginners judo (preferably) or BJJ class in Clare area (or Limerick) class. Heard there is a Judo class opening in Ennis soon but can't find any details. Tried BJJ in UL but was way behind the class in ability and experience. Any suggestions welcomed.

Everyone starts off way behind, but with a bit of time you'll catch up.

From what I hear UL BJJ is a great club so I wouldn't give up on it that fast. You could also check out UL Kickboxing & MMA, the club I used to coach. If you are only interested in the grappling side of things that's grand, you don't have to do the striking classes, although I'd recommend trying it all out. More info is on the link in my sig, or if you have any questions just shoot.

You could also check out www.combatsportscentre.com which is out in near caherclonlish, it's run by Ger Healy.

How distinct are UL BJJ and UL MMA? Do the MMA do grappling separately to the guys doing BJJ?

Yes they are two seperate clubs. UL Kickboxing & MMA has been around 4 years, started as purely a light contact Kickboxing club, then I started adding bits on. UL BJJ is a pajama club ( ), which started this college year and is coached by Fergal Quinlan. Of course there is a fair bit of overlap in membership between the clubs, as well as with Gers place. It's all good. :)

buck 65, i'm training in both the bjj and kickboxing club in ul. you should come back down and give us another go.
i know when you start, bjj can seem like a load of random unconnected moves, and while your rolling, your trying to work in the last tech you drilled, then you get swept with a move youve never seen, and tapped with an exotic sub, but any of the more advanced guys down there will be happy to walk you through what they did, and go slow to let you try movement, positioning, etc.
I don't know how long you came down for, but try getting a bjj and mma class in each week, one class a week isn't ideal. if your really stuck come find me, I'm the long-haired scruffy one ;)

I dont believe that Ennis judo class is starting, but i have a contact number for the coach if you want to ask again. I think Mike Carrolls club in Limerick city would match what your looking for. pm me if you want the phone numbers. For the record I have nothing to do with LUMA- bunch of losers!!

    Roper,

All except the BJJ club are LUMA. Fergal wouldn't really up to the high standards we set. I mean they guy doesn't even charge much for training. Plus we wears a gi, nuff said.

There is no judo in the area, the closest you'll get is with Mike Carroll who is a black belt in judo and jiu-jitsu-www.wazakaicombatclub.com for contact details

AS regardstraining with Mike, I know he has like a 4th dan or something in judo, but he does not, and I must stress does not, teach straight up judo.

His classes consist (or did when I trained with him) of some striking, some take down work, some ground work, and some self-defence. Generally he did a different range each month. Some of the guys, including myself, also did an mma class once a week, but Mike told me that he is aiming at more self defence, weapon defence etc., rather than the sport aspect of either the ground work or the judo. hope this helps

By the way he trains in Perry Square in entre of Limerick, Tues and Thurs, 8-10
