I think it should be made law that anyone who takes up photography must go to Barcelona at least once in their lives. Barcelona should be for photographers what Mecca is for Islam.

Some really nice character shots there, but i prefer some of those in your flickr. The vignetted corners looks a little too strong in places, but thats a matter of personal preference. It won't let me post it, but the shot of the couple holding hands is my favourite, I'm not too sure about the cropping - can't decide whether i would like to see their whole faces or have their heads cropped out completely - but their hands held forms a nice subject.

Nice shots Fajitas, I see you like dark corners. The second shot is the best IMHO, but it looks a little tilted too the left, also the left hand corner is also a little too dark...The third shot you processed is too dark.

on the second one, howq about a crop to leterbox style, cutting off the bright lights at the top?

Nice work, funny lighting for me, but I like it.

I love the one with the Fruit, his expression is wonderful, and the use of light creates a juxtaposition where something so fresh appears to be for sale in a dingy corner of an alley. Well done!

They're all very dark but in a very nice way that makes the images feel very rich. The vignette is also very pleasing. Great work as usual!

On Barcelona, I love the place, I went there for a conference shortly after a got my 350D and I would love to get back there again now that I know what some of the buttons do. It really is a photographers mecca.

I'd a trip with work there in September 2004, stayed in the Arts Hotel, so I can highly recommend that place :-)

I can't see past the vignetting, I'm afraid - it looks so artificial it's ruins the shots.
It's making in images darker that they're already been over-made. Number three, I can't see anything.

Shrimp thinks he knows everything, I don't have such a claim.
That was an honest opinion on those photographs, take or leave it as you wish.

the food market off las ramblas is superb, if a bit dark, for photos.
speaking of crime, a mate of mine was etherised there.
another mate had a prostitute who wouldn't let go of his hand for half an hour, kept trying to convince him to try things no sane man would ever attempt.

I'd normally be a bit leary of the darkness and vignetting, but you've really managed to pull it off here. It adds a sumptuous quality to what could otherwise have been nice travel shots. I particularly 1 and 4, although in the fourth one its a shame that the guy on the bench watching is obscured by the vignette. I think the idea of a wide crop on the second one could work well, as I find the brightness of the fluorescent tubes quite distracting in an otherwise dark scene.

Sounds like a plan. Though I can just see the headlines/mass deportations now.

...a mate of mine was etherised there...

Anaesthetised with ether? How does that happen? How much did he have to pay? :D

There's a really good electronic music festival goes on there in June - Sonar. Not sure if anybody else here would enjoy that sort of thing. Good for snaps too. Lots happening in the city around that time.

Fajitas! hope you don't mind but I ran your 2nd pic through PS with a little adjustment, I think the closer crop works well as the flourescent lights are a distraction.

just got home (to the monitor i trust), and the b&w shot is insanely dark.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,624 ✭✭✭✭Fajitas!

Cheers all, yeah, the shots are looking terribly dark on other moniters, I've had a check about. I have this one calibrated to print...so I guess I'm happy with them. Might give them a go on one of the other moniters.

I like the crop on that one, but dislike the frame. Will defo consider the crop though.

Jeez where on earth in the city were you guys going to say you kept getting mugged? The only time I ever came across anything remotely suspicious was in Park Guell where I was sitting in a kinda deserted part of the park and a local teen chose to sit on my bench. I got up and moved just in case.

were you anywhere near las ramblas at night?
the city is famous for petty crime.

and the hookers, as previously mentioned, are incredibly brazen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,319 ✭✭✭sineadw

second lens down our pants, we'd look quite a sight.

    Indeed you would!

I love the darkness of the shots personally - adds a depth and dinginess to the colours. God only knows what my monitor is set to though.

Yup, I was staying in a hotel just off La Ramblas, but never had or saw a problem. And if you want to know about brazen prozzies you should try Liverpool at night!
