Any thoughts on AA insurance?

    Lo all.

Well received the insurance renewal from Hibernian there TPF&T for €847.

However I had decided that I wanted to change to fully comp so I checked on their website and it came up with €977. Fair enuff. Tried completing it and was told that my car (Alfa 156 2L) was classed as "Special" so could not use the online service.
So, I rang them and they confirmed that Alfa Twin spark engines had an extra loading on it so my quote would in fact be €1116. (thieves)

Called the AA and they offered Fully Comp plus NCB protection for €670!!
Rang Hibernian back and reminded them that I had been a customer for 6 years and told them what the AA was offering. Was basically told they could do nothing for me. (cheers)

Now, my question (finally :-) ) is has anyone any experiance with AA insurance? What do they offer with the Policy?

    Cheers.
    S.

AA are actually brokers, so if you do take your insurance out with these, you may find that your with AIG, AXA, etc...

I have been with them for the last couple of years and have found them to be the cheapest. Every year my uinsurance has been less then quoted. i.e. This year I was quoted €480 FC on the motor, paid over the phone via Laser, got letter saying that they had got the policy cheaper again and a refund of €80 was enroute...Happy Days...

Do you mind my asking how old your are? I'm assuming from your 6 years you have full NCB/full licence.

edit: i've never been able to get a quote from them before as I've only just got 2 years NCB in my own name this year.

AA are only brokers so your insurance could be with RSA etc so you're better off checking with AA as it depends on the policy they're selling. I've been insured via AA on and off for years and are usually very good.

    Sorry, forgot to add details.

Stephen, I think you need to have at least 4 years NCB before they even listen to you.

    26 yo male
6 years NCB with a full license and 1 year with a provisional.
    Car is a 2001 Alfa 156 2.0 Twin Spark.

Yeah, thought they were a broker alright, I've asked her to send me out the details, I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out Hibernian are offering the quote.

Don't mind at all, now weather I tell or not is another thing... :D , I'm 35, but, I did have a claim against my policy about 2 years ago. Because I had the step back protection, I only lost part of my NCB. I still need another couple of years to get the claim from my history.

Also, try getting a spouse policy. I done this a number of years ago and save about £200 (€250). This works better for a male, Get you G/Friend named on the policy, doesn't matter if she has a full or Provo licence. When I done this, My Partner only had a Provo licence and her NCB was not taken into consideration.

I'm with them as well. They are brokers but they seem to
a/ Discount the price you'd get from the same insurer direct
b/ add extras that you would not get from the same insurer direct e.g. windscreen cover, etching, etc.

I shop around each year and I think Quinn was the only one that came close on price but without the added benefits.

Their website claims you needs 2 years or more, but then they don't offer online quotes, so maybe they'll just tell me to go and jump if I ring them ;)

I got a great quote from the AA on my house insurance last year, and the service was excellent. However for my car insurance I've always used First Ireland brokers in Phibsboro. AA haven't managed yet to beat them on price whenever I've renewed my insurance, so it might be worth giving them as shout as well.

I went with AA last year, insurance is with AIG. It was cheap all right (although I'm not 100% sure they got the model of my car right). Premium is due again in about a month, so I'll see what it's like then.

    Hmm,
I was asked on the IVR gautlet if I had at least 4 years NCB before I was put through to a CSR.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

I've gone through AA in the past getting some good quotes. But none of the insurance companies they are a broker for, provide insurance for cars with an engine over 2.5l

@OP - €670 looks like a pretty good quote. Well done!

Aye, bit too "pretty" though :)
Going to wait until I have a good look at the policy doc and extras before I tell the other crowd to sling their hook.

    Well it's done.

As soon as I received the actual letter from the AA with the figure of 670.94!!, I called Hibernian to see if they would budge.
Nada. Not even when I offered to fax the quote to prove it.

So I am now an AA customer. :)

My 2.5L is with the AA. Before I got this car I got quotes on several >2.5L cars (including your old 530i :D) and there was no problem. In fact it wouldn't have cost any more than the 2.5L for me to go up to a 4.4L

That is the way to do, vote with your wallet. I'm amazed at the amount of people who just accept their renewal quote every year without shopping around.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 458 ✭✭shurl

    I know! It's crazy.
Mentioned all this to a mate of mine who is also with Hibernian, the response was "ah sure it's a lot of work and messing about to change over"
This is why we continue to get ripped off in this country.
Too many people are content to settle for the easy way out.

It's actually pathetic that insurance companies won't even try to match other quotes. Especially when you've proved to be a good customer (i.e. no claims). They are making so much profit these days, they don't care about losing the odd customer here and there. In the 8 year I've been insured, I've been with 5 different insurers as nearly every year my current insurer sends a renewal that is higher then other quotes I get. I'm with the AA now so hopefully I won't have to move again as they seem to be the best for experienced drivers.

your in the motor forum digging up an old thread. just wait and you will get an answer to the same question you asked in the apple media devices forum

    Thread locked.
@Sineadphelan - please don't reopen old threads, ask your question in a relevant forum (iPhones questions don't belong in a motors forum) and also don't post the same question in 5 separate forums
