I've been working in a retail outlet for 8/9 months now. I really want to get my tongue pierced but would employers frown on this? I'm usually on the Customer Service Desk and so I'm in constant interaction with customers. I don't wanna do anything that would jeprodise(sp) my job! But at the same time really want to get it done... Thanks for any responses! :D

Is your boss approachable? You could ask him or somebody that's been in the company long-term?

I'm not an employer but I've worked for employers who would have no problem with this and employers who would take serious issue with it, even for employees who aren't directly customer facing. I would say that the answer is entirely dependent on the employer or manger and there will always be a danger of someone taking issue with it.

I think the only thing to do is to ask.

Yeah I know asking would be the best thing.... But she'll prob say something like "Well it's your own choice but I'd rather you didn't." Then I get it done and she gives me gammy jobs the rest of the time I'm there!! The only other person that had piercing was a fella and it was his ear... There's been a high turnover of late so where the only people that have been there for years are quite old... I'd be considered to be there longest to the rest of the part time people!!! So know employees I could ask... Can the fire you for having it? Like if I got it, and couldn't take it out for a while?

    Thanks for the advice!

Can you not get 'placeholders' that are not that visible but would keep the piercing open during the week ....?

Doubt if they'd fire you over it.
    Are you a permanent employee?
Also, there should be some published company policy on piercings.

Normally, they don't mind as long as you cover any visible piercings. But then again if you were working somewhere like Brown Thomas or with an image to uphold they'd probably object pretty strenuously.

If your manager is approachable, ask her.

Bear in mind that when you get your tongue pierced it'll take a while for the swelling to go down.

You can avoid the whole situation by piercing it while you're on hols, come back with it healed: then they'd have to be staring into your mouth to notice it;)

I wouldn't worry too much about it though: it's not as if you're getting a tatoo on your face or something!
