Heading to S. America, Any advice?

I'm heading over to South America for the end of July, start of August and was wondering if anyone has any words of wisdom?

I'm basically doing a Trailfinders package deal thingy, so most days are set out as to what I'll be doing. I'm starting in Peru, knocking about the Amazon a bit (in Iquitos, i think), then heading off to the Inca Trail and then heading over to the Galapogos.

This is my first trip to SA and pretty much my first holiday that doesn't involve drinking in a caravan down the west of Ireland.

So I was wondering about silly little things about what should I bring, what the Inca Trail is like, places I should have a look out for and stuff like that. Any help would be apreciated. :)
