Check out this picture of an angel in the vatican.

Angel or lens flare make your own mind up. Go on tell us what you think.

Ok here is the image so save people from having to read the article:

    angel1MMP.jpg

Now here I have looked at it a bit. I'll just point out something on it.

The "neck" of the angel isnt really accurately portraited as its where the light is hitting a piller so its cast on two sperate surfaces.

In 'B' below you can see what the light would look like if it was cast on a single flat surface.

    angel2MMP.jpg

The fact that the light cast certainly does look as if it is broken in line with the pillar strongly suggests it is projected on the wall and not appearing mid air or above the crowd.

My opinion is that the light streaming in that window is hitting something and reflecting back at the wall.

Also seeing as there is no shadow cast on the immediate left of the pillar by the light we can tell that the light is hitting it pretty much head on. Possible even from where the photographer is standing?

    castshadow.jpg

Maybe its a reflection from his lense? Maybe its purposely done as if you were taking a pic of a scene like that I'd imagine you would try get the whole window in - if not what is the photographer taking a picture of? He could of course have just seen the angel and snapped a pick of it but then surely the angel would be in the centre of the shot?

I think it is an unusual way of the light appearing within the building and not an 'apparition'....but this is my non-technical view.
BUT I wouldn't doubt the possibility that the light fell in that particular way, not by accident or chance, but rather that it was a sign to the viewer.
I like to think that signs from the other side have a physical imprint on the physical world we live in and use the laws of nature to give us signs like these.

I'm not too sure if what I said above makes sense, kinda foggy-headed this morning.
    To summise.....
I think it is a matter of light being reflected funnilly but could still be a 'sign'.
    :)

I get what you mean and conpletely agree. Simulacara is where something like a cloud or a tree look like objects or people - I covered this in my thesis of "Art of the Paranormal" years ago.

I read of cases where things like the face of Jesus apers in a stain in a wall and a community gathers around this. Now obviously the similarity is more than likely coincidence but maybe this 'coincidence' happened for a reason.

What was tinkerbell doing in Rome ?

and 6th how do you know in what ways an 'angels' neck may or may not strech or rotate ?

I use the term 'angel' because thats the word we've been given here to use. If this is for discussion of angels and angelic entities then Paranormal Forum isn't the best place for it. But I'm discussing the visual phenomenon present in this photograph & to me it appears to be projected (by whatever means) onto the far wall. This backed up by how the edge of the pillar seems to 'fracture' the light/image.

Btw, christ is does look like Tinkerbells standard pose!

    Hmmm,

so it could be tinkerbell, or any ohter supernatural creature like an angel, assuming you believe in the existence of such. Reading the comments on the original article, it seems to be a black and white division of those who "believe" it's an angel, and those Dawkinistas (or serious photography heads) who say Pah it's just lens flare etc.

Of course it could also be a supernatural being using lens flare to make itself known.

    Anyway, it's a good photo.

Its a splash of light on a wall that looks vaguely (not much) like an angel shape. We can quite clearly see that there is bright sunshine pouring in through windows. Do we really want to make this out to be anything more?

EDIT: 6th, looking at the photo I'd say you have the pillars backwards. The "head" pillar is actually closer.

You're dead right on the pillar, I had noticed it shortly after and I wasn't arsed fixing it. The same point is made weither way - the shape of the light is distorted by the surface and would look different depending on where you view it from. Its an angel to one persona nd a fluffy bunny to another.

Do we really want to make this out to be anything more?

I dont personally but for religious people in that setting its like the face of the virgin mary on a burnt slice of toast.

it's a funny looking pic all the same,

IMO I doubt it is "natural" looks like something man made or something else, I dont think that light coming in created that shape, but I'm far from an expert on such things

In the comments on the article one guy claims he is a camera technician and that the light is caused by flare within the lens. I doubt that though because it clearly follows the contours of the wall.

    EDIT:

Further thoughts - If the "head" pillar is closer, then the light is likely to be coming from dead on or from the right hand side. Now, look in the top right of the picture. Is that another shaft of light coming from off screen? A shaft that seems to be heading straight for our angel?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,247 ✭✭✭✭6th

Seems to be pointing to the angel but the wall she's projected on it set back quite a bit and i'm sure the shaft of light couldnt be hitting it. More than likely a reflection than a direct hit of sun light.

Have to say I'm with LIB on this one - can't say if it's real/man made/supernatural lens trick but it's a good photo!!

it's an angel of the Lord Jesus Christ and proof of the existance of God our Father, all the naysayers asking for proof of the existance of God here you are, what say you now, repent, kneel and pray. God is forgiving and he will forgive you if you repent.

Uh, wow, ok. What about all the people making good explanations for it being just reflected light?

I'll be the first to admit that i'm quite sceptical, maybe its just a reflection, maybe the photo was tampered with, i dunno, it does have a very angel like shape tho!!!
