What Do You Do If You Lose Your Passport Abroad?

I met a guy in the queue at the check-in desk of Aer Lingus in Chicago yesterday who had mislaid his (Irish) passport somewhere between his connecting flight into O'Hare and the Aer Lingus desk. As I was leaving to go into the departure lounge he was in a deep discussion with an official. He didn't board the flight though. Obviously he wasn't allowed to. What does one do in a situation like that assuming that the passport isn't found? Does the Irish Consulate issue a special temporary one or what?

You have to contact the nearest Irish Embassy or Consulate and put it in writing. I think that they require the normal documentation before issuing a new one which would be difficult to get if abroad.

Head down to the nearest Irish consulate, or British if there is not an Irish one about, and they will sort you out somehow or other.

Or do as a mate did after his passport went missing in Amsterdam and persuaded the checkin supervisor to call the immigration desk in the destination airport where they had a look through the local phone book and found his name and then faxed a hand written note across to say that they would let him in at the other end, he then got through the passport control in Schipol with that scrap of paper as well.

Thanks for the info. A useful tip is to photograph your passport and other travel documentation and send the photo(s) to your Hotmail account (or other mail account accessible through an internet connection anywhere). then, if they do go missing, at least you can print off duplicates. It should help in dealing with
    officialdom.
