Me and four other friends are making our way through europe for a month by interrailing in July. We plan to bring tents and camp out wherever we can to save on hostel expenses and that, is this a good idea? Also, any tips or that for interrailing??

i was interrailing last summer. dont know if camping is the best idea, as u wont save that much. most of the hostels in europe are relatively cheap and they are a good place to meet like minded travelers. u get free breakfasts in a lot of them aswell. if u want it to be a cheap break u should consider going to the more eastern countries such as poland, hungary, croatia etc.

I disagree with Mac. Tents can save you lots of $$$. We didn't bring any but ended up buying them in Croatia. Funnily enough, it seems to be the more expensive places that camping is available. e.g. Amsterdam, Munich. Just bring something manageable because you want to be carrying as little as possible.

I'm also heading interrailing in July :)

Not to highjack the thread, but can someone remind me how I buy the actual interrail ticket? I presume I can get them in the train station before I go, but you can buy them on websites too, and I thought that was wierd cos AFAIK you need to show your passport before you can buy them. Cheers.

you buy the ticket in usit then fill in the details of any trains you want to use on
a grid on the back of the ticket which gets stamped. i also remember having to pay extra on overnight trains and ~"fast "trains

And just pay the subsidies. From what I saw it's basically impossible to get away with not doing so and it costs more to pay on the train.
