I hate the word revert as in " I'll revert to you on that issue at a later date".

    It's just unnecessarily pompous!

I presume you mean refer, as revert makes absolutely no sense in that sentence.

    chillax

Don't like super at all for some reason. I think it's too american, or sky footbally a word.

Genius is also a very overused word...

Yes, this is why its so fúcking annoying when people use revert, as it is completely wrong in the context. Its totally endemic in business and makes my blood boil

i hate the word catagorically, as in "i can catagorically tell you what happened"
i hate it, its just a stupid fancy word that wastes your time trying pronouncing it!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,239 ✭✭✭✭WindSock

Literally. The overuse of it annoys me a lot.''I was literally stood there'' as opposed to metaphorically?

Far too many to list and overused like legend or chillax (as mentioned) also bling and other words that people learned from MTV hippity hop or whatever you call it.

'Snag' only ever seen in novels - as in 'he snagged a couple of sandwiches as he went past the table'. Don't know why it annoys me, its not incorrect. I don't have much to worry about. :D

Ah, the MTV generation. With their hippin' and their hoppin' and their bippin' and their boppin', they don't know what the jazz is all about...

In other news I'm not to fond of the word 'weeping'. No matter the context I always think of pus.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 670 ✭✭✭Hard Larry

The phrase "touch base" and the word "liase". People who these need to be beaten to death with a wet mop.

Oh and of course the word 'Tax'

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,190 ✭✭✭Haven't a Clue

Yeah, I don't like loitering either. Always gives a bad impression on the person they're on about, intentional or not...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,509 ✭✭✭✭randylonghorn

I've just said it in another thread, so I may as well add it to the list here ...

I hate the word "slut", and would cheerfully ban it from the English language!

It's hardly pop culture, it's been used in Dublin since at least my father's teenage years.

EDIT: Forgot to mention the word I hate most - kudos. For some reason it drives me mad when people use it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 644 ✭✭✭Mackleton

Cant stand the overuse of the word "stunning" in reference to how someone looks. There are situations that merit the word like seeing niagra falls or something that literally leaves you without words but to say a girl looks stunning is overstating it, unless you are a groom watching your bride approach you up the aisle. Also hate "Tasty" for some reason, dont like the sibilant sound it makes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,136 ✭✭✭✭is_that_so

    Basically, heads up, going forward.

I also know someone who hates the word "yellow"

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,698 ✭✭✭InFront

Not a particular word, but I hate the way my alarm clock says "se-ven thir-ty foive" like a Stephen Hawking impression. I guess you could say I hate the words seven thirty-five.

'Chill' As in the 'calm down' sense of the word.
'Chillax' The hybrid of 'chill' and 'relax'

People should burn for using those words.

I also hate the whole ebonics language as well.

There is other words as well that I hate that I can't think of at the moment, but those two above are the worst IMO.

I can see where your friend is coming from. While it wouldn't be on my most hated words list, it is a word that I dislike. I've come to realise that I have no rational reason for disliking certain words, for instance I have no problem with room or groom, but some words just bug me and that's all there is to it.

    Scrotum. Self-explanatory, really.

I can't stand 'aggresiveness'. What is wrong with 'aggression?' I once edited a wikipedia page just to take it out.

    Toilet.

That word makes me shudder. I think it sounds so scummy and common.

"Loo", "Lav", "Ladies", etc. are all acceptable, but I hate, hate, hate to hear someone (particularly a woman) announcing that they "have to go to the toileh".
