Hi I moved this over from HE, hope thats ok

I bought one of the Matsui 32 inch that were advertised in Currys over Christmas.
A couple of minutes after I turn it on it starts flicking between 4:3 and widescreen, with "auto" flashing as it does. It stops after a minute and then once I pick the desired screen size its ok until the next time I turn it on. I have chorus connected to it via scart. Its chours mds.

Has this happened to anyone else? Or any idea why it might be happening? There doesn't seem to be way to turn auto aspect off.

    Thanks.

Hi Pat are u using the chorus digital or analog service, if its the digital u need to set up your set-top box to 16:9 aspect ratio.

U can do this by the following method

    Press Menu
    Highlight Installation and press ok
Highlight Set Top Box Installation and press ok
Highlight Tv And Vcr Installation and press ok
Highlight Tv Screen Size and push left or rite to select 16/9 then press ok to save.

    Hope that helps.

    Hi Steve,

Thanks a mill for that, very much appreciated.

I did that last nite and it worked,
but now when I go to some channels it goes back to 4:3 so I am not sure what is more annoying - (1) the way its was where after about 7 mins its starts flicked between wide and 4:3 and u have no control for about 90 seconds but once it settles down u can pick a size and it stays until u turn off tv or (2) the new way where each time you change 2 certain channels u have to pick screen size.

But still thanks a mill cause it definitely confirmed for me that its a chorus thing and not a prob with the tv. If its ok some more questions

    - do I have any other options ? (other than join sky which is looking likely)

    - is there any way I can run it through the video that would stop this happening? I already have a video sender on the second scart point on the chorus box,

    - is this happening to everyone with chorus digital that has a widescreen tv ???

Sorry for being long winded but just amazed if this is something loads of people are putting up with.

I think that you might have to also set something on the TV so it's not on "auto". There might be something in the install section of the TV to set the channel/av to 16:9

Happy to be of some help Pat, but like shamrock said, I think its down now to the tv itself, Unfortunetly not all channels are set to broadcast in 16:9 which is not a problem caused by chorus. I have both Chorus and Sky and I'm currently watching Liverpool v PSV and its unfortunetly being broadcasting in 4:3 which is annoying, so Im watching it with blank lines done the side which looks crappy.

So I think changing to Sky wont necessarily fix yr problem but you would get a much better picture quality in my opinion.

    Regards,
    Steve

    Thanks a mill guys.

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be away of setting the tv, I rang the customer helpline and they said its defaulted to "auto" aspect and that can't be changed, except manually each time.

Prob is if I change it when turn on tv after the 7 mins it still does its mad flicking thing.

Take your point about sky - but pluged it into a friends sky and the flicking thing didn't happen.

Was running it thru d video thought me showing that I don't understand how things work?

I did a search for a manual for that TV. I think that I found the right one. According to it the remote should have an "aspect" button which should allow you to select 4:3, WIDE, AUTO or FULL.
It doesn't say anything about it saving or storing that for the future, so you might have to do it every time you switch it on.

I'm not sure of this, but I suspect you could circumvent this "auto" business if you use a scart lead that's not fully wired. The signal that allows the box to control the TV travels on a different pin from the ones carrying the audio and video signals, so if you got a suitable lead, or doctored one the right way, you could prevent the box from annoying your telly. However, this would also prevent the box from grabbing the TV to the right input when you turn it on, if that's an issue.

I'm sure you could get all the relevant SCART wiring info off the web.

Yes that is the right one with the aspect button, I am ok with setting it each time, its just the uncontrollable flicking that frustrates me, so I am intrigued by the doctored scart idea, I will search for how to do it, any advise would be much appreciated.

    Just for completion
    - i "disabled" pin 8 on the scart and it seems to have solved the proble, of course now nothing to indicate to tv that that scart is in use, so just pick manually, slightly slowed cause rather than av button have to flick thru tv, video, hdmi, scart 1,

Can i just ask was this flickering happening cause even thought there is nothing wrong with tv it doesn't have the controls to effectively deal with chorus output? Still wondering why it happened with mine and why not a problem for all chorus customers,

    Thanks for the help

    Pat
