Is Irish important to the Irish now, and do you find the lipservice paid by polititions to the Irish language insulting or good??

I personnally think it shouldn't be a clincher in the election, but the truth is the lack of ideals that is to be seen is sad in Irish parties... But Polititions shouldn't start and end each speech in Irish, while not actually saying anything important through Irish...

The Irish language has seen a revitalisation among those in secondary school now. I heard a couple of months back that kids have started to use Irish to communicate with each other. Potentially because grown-ups can't understand.

You also have to look at things like the Tar Éis Na hUaire forum on Boards. It is pretty active and I imagine it getting more so. Look at the way Welsh has been revitalised in the last couple of decades. It can be done.

Struggling to see the relevance to this board, beyond the passing mention of an election in the OP.

All I can find at the minute:
    Kids Find Irish 'Cool'
SCHOOLKIDS now want to learn Irish - thanks to "cool" TV star Hector OhEochagain and hit soap Rosa Run.

Irish Primary Principals Network president Tomas O Slatara praised bi-lingual TV shows for boosting Irish.

He said: "It is well established that teaching another subject through the medium of the target language is linguistically and educationally sound."

    Article on Gaelscoileanne includes following:
TG4 presenter Aoife Ni Thuairisg says Irish is finally in fashion. "I remember when it was very uncool to speak Irish. But kids in schools today don't have the preconceptions about it that many people would have had in the past," she said.

"They have a positive attitude and realise that Irish is cool precisely because it makes us different. It's about time we celebrated our unique culture and nationality," she added.

fair enough but really provides little evidence of a revival, going back to op, personally Irish is of little importance to me, the language has very little relevance to today's Ireland, I would like to think that our kids are being taught languages at an early age that are relevant.

"TG4 presenter Aoife Ni Thuairisg says Irish is finally in fashion"

well she is bound to say that, as are all those with a vested interest in the language, if it is indeed the case, good, but hand on heart, are we really likely to be conducting business in Irish in the years to come.

Bhíos ag irí comhrá faoin tábhachtach atá ag an gaeilge san toghcháin, níl faoi tábhachtacht an gaeilge....

I was looking for a conversation of the importance of Irish in the election... will it affect voters etc...? And as a kid myself I know that I have been at parties where spontaniously a bunch of start talking through Irish.... So there's evedence enough I hope.

Anyway any opinions on Irish in the election, which party to vote etc...
